Legacy Journal:Trifecta: Olympic Games, Democratic Convention, Quad State visit

Section:

Briefs

Summary:

The 080808 Beijing Olympics Games are history, the Democratic Convention is beginning in Denver, Colorado, and a quick trip to Vermont, Massachusetts, and Connecticut from Rochester, New York is in the books

“To wrest from nature the secrets which have perplexed philosophers in all ages, to track to their sources the caused of disease, to correlate the vast stores of knowledge, that they may be quickly available for the prevention and cure of disease—these are our ambitions.” --- Sir William Osler.

“Geography is destiny” --- John Gilman Coit and many others.

* The results: Michael Phelps is a swimming phenom; the U.S.A women gymnists are too cute for words; the men’s volleyball team is toughness personified; and the Chinese are on the march to modernity using the serious game rules of economic hardball.

** Eastern upstate New York, southern Vermont, mid Massachusetts and eastern Connecticut were on the week long circuit.  Ct. is cute, traditional, and Congregational to the core.  The Deerfield area, the lower Connecticut River, and the Long Island Sound “Shore” around New London and Groton were cool, clear, correct.

UConn at Avery Point has a Department of Marine Science with a picture window marine view.  But, Scripps, Woods Hole, or Bar Harbor it is not.  The U.S.C.G. Academy and the Nuclear Submarine facility are small national treasures with free open to the public museums.  Shipping, trade, and freedom of the seas are the themes of the area that includes Mystic Sea Port.

The amount of ferry traffic across the sound is impressive.  The Native American Indian’s have seized the opportunity of transporting gamblers and gamers directly by water from NYC to their Connecticut reservation casinos. So, the core of the area is culturally mixed.

*** Meanwhile, the country has yet another opportunity to get to know “ the Obama story”.  This time the stage setting is Denver, Colorado.  Not too shabby for a man with roots stretching from Kenya, to Indonesia, to Kansas, to Bainbridge Island, WA, to prep school in Hawaii, to Occidental College in California, to to Chicago, to Harvard.  The national election is Obama’s to lose.  He has the money, the media friendly charismatic presence, the image of a outsider with a photo op family, a wife from central casting, youthful vigor, and the Kennedy family endorsement.  Time will tell if he, his staff, his advisers, and his volunteers can sustain their collective post convention momentum.

Further more, the marathon fact squad is in town. No, that team is not led by the certifiably silly members of the 4th estate--- but by the serious and bright Mitt Romney, fresh from the Olympic Games.  Meanwhile, Bill Clinton stands ready to step onto center stage and continue to make his case for ?---?.  Let is be noted that the role of Commander and Chief of the U.S. military is no small matter.  President Harry Truman, a WW I combat veteran, desegregated the Armed Forces by executive command in 1948.

The news from Dayton, Ohio is that the McCain choice for the Republican VP slot is Sarah Palin, the 44 y/o tough, straight talking, photogenic first term governor of Alaska.  Her policy strengths are energy, ethics, and national security.  An athletic, out-of-doors person, hockey Mom, she is the ultimate Washington D.C. outsider.  She is now part of the “A-A Maverick team” and is running a deep route pattern for the end zone.  BTW, basketball in Alaska qualifies as a contact sport contact sport.  The candidate’s husband is a native of the state, a blue collar union oil worker. The couple are gun owners who hunt and fish.  The NYC-Wash D. C. set will not be pleased. But, the Twin Cities will be welcoming.

In addition, SFGATE.COM reports that native son, Bernie Ward, former Roman Catholic priest, Cardinal Newman High School theology teacher, KGO God Talk radio host, and 3 year legislative aide to Barbara Boxer, has be sentenced by a federal judge to 7 years of jail time for the crimes related to a long history of events around charges of child pornography. Boxer, the liberal Democratic Bay Area attack dog is one of the most strident first responders to the news of the Sarah Palin selection.  Boxer has recently called Palin “arrogant”, “radical” and “dangerous”.  Who is the pit bull attack dog here?

Summer fun for kids includes continuing to learn, explore, and grow in body and mind.

Physical activity and music are part of the mix for the Little girls of Rochester who recently spent two weeks in California. San Francisco, Santa Rosa, and Santa Barbara were in the mix of family venues. See and hear the videos. The embedded version below requires a shockwave-flash plugin.

Main:

Emma and Tessa are now back in Rochester, NY and are in full time - full speed biking, swimming and skating modes.  Meanwhile the Buffalo Bills are painting the town of Pittsford and the John Fisher College practice field red and blue.  Live music is in the air every night of the week.

Legacy Journal: High Finance, Bad Loans, and Banking Reform

Section:

None

Summary:

Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac are Depression Era hybrid twins that were originally created to extend easy housing credit to individuals, create construction jobs, and bring the power of the federal government to the needs of the poor.  Reduced regulatory and reporting standards, minimal reserve requirements, access to low interest funds, no taxes on “profits”, and a presumption of federal protection, if necessary lead to a powerful competitive advantage and a dominant home mortgage market share.  Years of increasing size, a Washington, D.C. power base of lobbyists, administration appointments, Congressional inaction , and a looming economic moral hazard contributed to a stock market meltdown of their share prices.

Raines and other friends of Angelo Mozilo, including Chris Dodd, Kent Conrad, and James Johnson, are reported to have received favorable loans from Countrywide.  A California Mozilo company, IndyMac is today officially “failed” and in Fed hands.

Main:

Meanwhile, former Freddy MAC chairman and CEO Franklin Raines and his ilk appear to have escaped tainted but largely beyond the reach of the law. Raines, of Harvard, Oxford, the Clinton OMB, and Lazar Freres, had his mismanagement errors and losses partially covered by insurance.

Legacy Journal: The U.S. Senate:  Paying Attention to the Details with Dianne Feinstein.

Section:

Politics

Summary:

Kennedy is on Medical Leave, Clinton is managing the mess of a missed opportunity, Obama is voting “Present”, Byrd is recovering, and Harry Read is not taken seriously.  Meanwhile, the Senior Senator from California is doing by default what other will not or can not do---- mind the store.  The washingtonpost reports what has long been known— the Senate dining room needs attention if not the reform of a major menu makeover.

Main:

The Senator, seems to have the grace to take on tasks begging to be done.  One was hosting the recent one on one quiet and constructive conversation between fellow Senators Clinton and Obama at her home in Washington . It seems to be in her nature, yes, her DNA, to do and say the right thing at the right time.  Her surgeon father, Leon Goldman, had the same skill set.  Calm demeanor, Character, Wisdom from Experience, Grace under pressure, Common Sense, Clarity of Purpose, Action Oriented have long been among Dr. Goldman’s daughter’s sterling qualities.  Goldman was known as “the Coach” among his peers and students at UCSF.  He was observant, a gentleman, and a skilled Surgical Department Chairman.

Now, if the Senator could have just found a way to have justified her voting in favor of the current Chief Justice Roberts. But that is another story more important than minding after proper lunches for aging Senators and the jobs of Senate food service employee who seem to have entitlements, if not true academic tenure.

Legacy Journal:  Neurosurgery-- A Short Memoire

Section:

Almanac

Summary:

The Neurosurgery performed today by Dr. Allan H. Friedman at Duke University in Durham, North Carolina on 76 year old Senator Edward Kennedy is yet reminder of the speed of progress in technology and the medical science.  The Kennedy also demonstrated that not all medical skill, knowledge and talent is located in Boston and New York City.  The public and the press appears to be amazed that the Kennedy brain tumor surgery was carried out with the patient in a wakeful and aware state in the operating room.  To the best of our knowledge, no video cameras for Utube clips were in the OR..

In the 60’s Nefzinger was the master of neurosurgery in San Francisco, and John Raaf, MD, PhD of Idaho, Stanford, University of Rochester, the Mayo Clinic and Portland were still Olympian oracles and pioneers in the Pacific Coast region.

Main:

Raaf was a fit sportsman:  a boxer, rower, river fisherman, and a formidable squash player who died at the age of 94 in 2000.  The psychosurgical procedure of prefrontal lobotomy had long been performed by Raaf and others at the State Hospital near Salem. That is the same procedure performed on one of Kennedy’s sisters in Boston.

Neuro procedures were once to tests of bladder capacity and fortitude. Carotid angiograms were done the residents and burr holes by the residents and tongs for traction were placed by the student clerks.

Iron filing CNS AV malformation thrombosis, patients with cortical atrophy from chronic glue sniffing and a 3d year clinical clerk seizing at night on the Pediatric Service because of an undiagnosed glioma of the brain were part of an eventful year rotating at UCLA Harbor General Hospital.

Yes, progress has been from the good enough to the vastly superior.

Legacy Journal: Happy St. Patrick’s Day and Go Green

Section:

None

Summary:

On St. Patrick’s Day in Rochester, N.Y. all is well.

image

* The temperature is 20, the sun is out, and the streets are dry.

* The green wearing school kids on the corner have mounted the steps of the yellow bus and are launched for the day.

* The green and yellow Ducks of Oregon are off to Little Rock as a #9 seed and the NCAA Men’s BB Tournament.

* The Republican National Convention in St. Paul, MN follows the Democrats in Denver, CO .  Is that live home field advantage in baseball?

Main:

# The climate good news is that no warming is in sight.  Snow is reported in the hills of San Diego. CA, and the Oceans continue to buffer their pH in the historic 7.8- 8.4 range , reliably pump and sequester carbon dioxide, bicarbonate, and carbonates into the pelagic deep.  One source on the science is AP 2001, Vol 1, Encyclopedia of Ocean Science, Carbon Cycle, pp 390, By Carlson, of the University of California, Santa Barbara. Ocean science seems to be the forgotten man in the AGW game on that the serious ocean scientists are beginning to weigh in on pH stabiliity, temperature consistency, and corral health.

## The greening of the Summit Dr.spring garden near Highland Park has started with a well lighted, home made, basement seed nursery of flowers, vegetables, and herbs .

### The Ducks are the # 6 team in the Pac-10. A very good ASU team was left at home.  All the best to Ernie Kent and the loyal Duck fans. Do not forget to bring your A game with a first half offense, and a second half defense.

#### The Democrats including the Super Delegates are concerned about the unhealthy spectacle of an international spotlight on a Delegate credentials fight in Denver in late August as the Bejing Summer Olympics are having their closing Ceremony. The Republics will mounting the pulpit in St. Paul in early September with a forum to launch their National
Campaign.

Meanwhile, the migratory birds from the south are starting to show up in Rochester at about the expected time according the local birds watchers and counters.

Legacy Journal: William F. Buckley

Section:

Politics

Summary:

William F. Buckley, Jr and John F. Kennedy both visited Eugene and the University of Oregon in 1959-60.  Both were impressive men to those of us who were young sophomores and unsophisticated, small town country rubes. We knew we has seen the elephant.

Main:

We did read the newspaper and watch B&W TV so were were aware of the that writer Buckley was tilting the windmills of Godless Yale University.  Kennedy was preparing his bold move from the Senate to the White House.

Both were tall, tanned, elegant, articulate, and to the manor born. The Ivy League was part of their shared pedigree.

WFB’s UofO forum was the Fishbowl in the Student Union where he spoke without notes in patrician tones about what, I do not recall.  But his style was memorable.  His tailored suit was without a crease, the knot of his tire was just right, his posture and diction were perfect, his message was cool, clear and logical.

JFK’s college appearance was a quick Q&A with a small campus group gathered at the cramped studio of the campus radio station.
