Legacy Journal:  the Professional Specialists v the Gentlemen PolyMaths: Having it All?

Summary:

Peak performance across the board is difficult whether one is dancing with the stars or training as a triathlete.  Gina Koleta of the nytimes continues to impress with her columns on exercise and competition. 

Main:

The same can be said of country naturalists, like Charles Darwin, working and writing from home at in Kent during the haydays of 19th century Victorian England.  The amateurs with all their enthusiasm for beatles and barnicles, reputations protected by a coterie of friends and family, and popular publishing success , were being replaced by the professional academics, societies, laboratories, and the latest in German instrumentation and organized science research

Meanwhile, the University of Rochester had a one day meeting at the City Convention Center for health care professionals treating women who are are pbese, diabetic or both. Guess what?

* American women are eating more, exercising less ,and gaining weight just like the Pina Indians did after they gave up their hunting and gathering more than a century ago.

* Fat woman are a risk for early death, growing big babies during pregnancy, having wound infections, and being difficult to manage during anesthesia and fetal evaluation exams like ultrasound.

* They may even break standard delivery room and operating room tables.  Whoa!

* Gastric bypass and banding surgery many have better, faster and more cost effective than medical therapy for morbid obesity in a properly selected population.

The preserved collection of the voluminous correspondence of Charles Darwin fills volumes and is the source of much of the current spate of publications on the man, his methods and his motives.  Part of that legacy can be found in the UK at the Darwin Correspondence Project.


Main:

: Asa Gray, Born 1810 in Oneida C. NY ,Fisher Professor of natural history, and Herbarium Director, Harvard University, 1842–88. Wrote numerous botanical textbooks and works on North American flora. President of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 1863–73; president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, 1872; a regent of the Smithsonian Institution, 1874–88. Foreign member, Royal Society of London, 1873. One of his collectors was John C. Fremont.

The Herbarium is part of the Harvard Museum of Natural History which shares its site with the Peabody Museum of Archeology and Ethnography.  The botany department, museum and medical school have graduated the drug culture cult hero, Andrew Weil of Philadelphia, San Francisco, and Arizona.

Recently, part of the Gray Darwin correspondence, quote #2) has been lifted from Gillespie and used to attack the scientific (hypothesis, theory) of evolution and elevate the “theory of Creation Science”.

Legacy Journal: Real Cold in Carolina, Coal, and ABR

Summary:

* Some media pundits are predicating that the weather in the northwest corner of South Carolina may effect the Huckaby turnout.  They may not be aware of the North Dakota effect.  A National Geographic writer made the mistake of appearing to dis the state in a recent article.  The temperate response of the state’s citizenry and leadership prompted Charlie Gibson of ABC News to name the state “Person of the Week” Have a good weekend.

** Scots have been using coal for a long time. Coal, iron and willing workers helped build the railroad lines that allowed the for the rapid and reliable delivery of mail, newspapers and people a throughout the British Isles.  Books publishing flourished and station book sales boomed as a result.

*** Meanwhile, look for a ABR movement early this year.  It will have stealthy and crafty anti-Mormon tone.  But, it is a dangerous and unpopular tactic.  Recently, the grandson of M. Gandhi, a resident of Brighton, NY was asked to resign his position with a University of Rochester affiliated peace and non-violence foundation after he wrote a web piece offensive to local Jews with holocaust sensitivities. 

Main:

:  Folks in most parts of the country are not intimidated by weather.  Nor are they fearful of cyclic ice age climate change that moves at a glacial geologic creeping pace.
A recent biography of van Allen of Iowa has a picture of him and other scientists working on defense related missile and satellite research at the South Pole in 1958 where the average temperature was reported as - 58 degrees.  His former grad student, James Hanson of NASA Goddard is not mentioned in the book.

::  The slums of Glasgow, Scotland were fertile recruiting grounds for early Mormons including Brigham Young.  The Eccles family is one example.  Mariner Eccles was in the FDR administration and was part of the first draft of the Federal Reserve System.

:::  And yes, there is a small book out on the life and record of Mitt Romney. Predictably, it is modest, polite, and plain spoken. 

::::  And aside.  The Swedish firm, MySQL will become part of Sun Micro of Silicon Valley.  To the best of our knowledge, the deal is Carbon Neutral.

Legacy Journal:  Minority Report: Polls, Elections, and Climate Policy

Summary:

* Today, we again learn from New Hampshire that political polls are poor forecasts of election results. Why?  Clearly many polls are badly done, many at intended to influence the results, and many voters and consumers disconnect their thoughts, from their verbal reports, and from their actions.  The easy analysis is that Granite state voters are independent and make there decisions in the secrecy of the voting booth.

** It is not widely reported, but Mitt Romney corralled one third of the New Hampshire Republican vote in a five candidate field led by a maverick hero. That is not a loss.  The contest moves on.

*** Bjorn Lomborg , the climate change maverick from Denmark is interviewed in the Canadian press.  His analysis is worth reading.

Main:

* The national presidential campaign is a marathon race.  The 71 year old McCain is impressive, but youth must be put into service in the international area.

** Put the pollsters and pundits on the sidelines.

*** Meanwhile, Lomborg , a young and thoughtful social scientist, is not pandering to backyard gardeners when is come to policy.  He is numbers and data focused.

Legacy Journal:  Number Two as Winners:  The Rest of the Story.

Summary:

We all like to see underdogs win. Avis vs Hertz.  The latest example is an impressive performance by the LSU Tigers of Baton Rouge, LA in the BCS Championship win over number one ranked Ohio State University.  One unsung hero of the win is first year LSU Offensive Coordinator, 50 year old, father of seven, Gary Crowton from the state of Utah.  He was calling plays for the SuperDome sky box and was seldom seen on the TV screen.  Mavericks make headlines.  Good Mormons quietly do their jobs. That is all you need to know except that he enjoys biking with his family.

Main:

Crowton has lived, played and coached around the country.  Orem, Provo, Snow JC, Idaho State, BYU, Oregon, Lousiana Tech, Chicago, Georgia, Boston College, Western Illinois, Colarado State.  He is a student of BYU Coach, Dr. LaVell Edwards , the “spread offense”, and he is part of a quarterback tradition that includes former Forty Niner Steve Young and Kellen Clemens, currently with the NY Jets.

He is but one example among many of quiet, competent, and capable team players making a difference over time. Some times that difference is on Mission, sometimes in the class room or on the field, sometimes at home, at church or in the community.  Dr. Edwards and his wife did a Mission in NYC after he retired from coaching in 2000 after eighteen years at BYU.  Gary Crowton was his replacement.

Meanwhile in New Hampshire, the nytimes video reporters visits the bars and discovers the natives heat their homes with $3 a gallon fuel oil and use wood burning stores.  The same voters have yet to hear of an energy plan from the candidates.  Perhaps the recent warm weather has influenced the messages and the turnout.

Revkin of GoEarth blog at the nytimes is still hot on melting ice in Greenland. In January yet? So, who has the most compelling worry?  BTW, the really good news weather story today is that a a lost snowmobile family was found in the snow blizzard National Forest areas out of Durango, CO. The predicted summer water shortage crisis predicted by earlier Revkin sources for the southern Rockies region seems to be rapidly fading.

Legacy Journal: Mormonism, Coal, and New Hampshire Polls

“We live in the midst of alarms; anxiety beclouds the future; we expect some new disaster with each newspaper we read.” ---- Abe Lincoln.






Mitt Romney is drawing media attention in New Hampshire. One New Hampshire newspaper editorial has labelled him a phoney, a nytimes reporter, Noah Feldman, is compelled to ask provocative questions and then call attention to Mormon polygamy and the “ idiocycracy” of clean living by avoiding tobacco, caffeine and alcohol. Does he also consider the lack of gambling and lotteries in Utah (and Hawai) as troublesome as the Judaic kosher food tradition?  In addition, Romney is also enviromental “inconvenient”.  He calls for a national energy stategy that includes liquid coal, increasing the supply of heating oil by building refinery capacity, and investing in nuclear energy.  The voters of New Hampshire are concerned about the winter price and availability of fuel oil, and the future costs of electricity.



Main:

The good news is that the media, including the press, is much more restrained than in the political days of Lincoln and cartoonist Thomas Nast.  Journalism is also sophisticated, subtile, and scientific in the arts of advertising, influencing, and choice making

* For example, GMA today reported from New Hampshire on a mind mapping “truth” gizmo that records a graphic image of emotional responses to messages and images of events, products, and people.  Is this the new brave world of political “science”?

** One of the world’s most costly construction project will be done by a Canadian firm.  It is a gas pipeline from the north to the hub in Calgary, Alberta.

*** Meanwhile, fear mongering, narrow mindedness and group think is alive and well in the free, but not cheap, mass media.

Legacy Journal:  The Purple Hue of Precinct Politics

Summary:

The New York Times is showcasing a politically focused professionally recorded project that uses five citizen reporters. It is full length reporting with an example at http://purplestates.tv/alex_ritchie.  Yes, the theme color is purple as in passion, but also as in a fusion of red and blue.

Main:

One example is Mitt Romney in Iowa.

* The traditional media pundits seem to find Romney uninteresting.  He has a ernest Boy Scout manner, he has a squeeky clean background, humor is not forte, one liners are not his style, and there are no smoke filled alcohol lubricated back room deals.  He may be even a little dull and a trifle boring like my usual breakfast of oatmeal. eggs and orange juice.  But, steady and regular seems to get the job done.

* He is hard core and consistent on taxes, military spending, and immigration.

: Romney does not play a musical instrument in public.

** He is comfortable in his own skin.

::  We do not care what kind of underwear he chooses.  That is personal, private, and not for public tabloid copy.

*** He is not given to the rhetoric of sharp personal attack.

::: He is aggressive and well informed on policy differences between himself and his fellow candidates.

**** He is respected by his opposition.

:::: They know that in the marathon that is the path to White House, he has the heart, the stamina , the loyal support and the momentum to go the distance and make his case directly to the American electorate.
