Legacy Journal: The U.S. Senate:  Paying Attention to the Details with Dianne Feinstein.

Section:

Politics

Summary:

Kennedy is on Medical Leave, Clinton is managing the mess of a missed opportunity, Obama is voting “Present”, Byrd is recovering, and Harry Read is not taken seriously.  Meanwhile, the Senior Senator from California is doing by default what other will not or can not do---- mind the store.  The washingtonpost reports what has long been known— the Senate dining room needs attention if not the reform of a major menu makeover.

Main:

The Senator, seems to have the grace to take on tasks begging to be done.  One was hosting the recent one on one quiet and constructive conversation between fellow Senators Clinton and Obama at her home in Washington . It seems to be in her nature, yes, her DNA, to do and say the right thing at the right time.  Her surgeon father, Leon Goldman, had the same skill set.  Calm demeanor, Character, Wisdom from Experience, Grace under pressure, Common Sense, Clarity of Purpose, Action Oriented have long been among Dr. Goldman’s daughter’s sterling qualities.  Goldman was known as “the Coach” among his peers and students at UCSF.  He was observant, a gentleman, and a skilled Surgical Department Chairman.

Now, if the Senator could have just found a way to have justified her voting in favor of the current Chief Justice Roberts. But that is another story more important than minding after proper lunches for aging Senators and the jobs of Senate food service employee who seem to have entitlements, if not true academic tenure.

Legacy Journal: Sounding Off on the Shape of Things to Come.

Section:

Coming Attractions

Summary:

Getting Back to Basics:

* Replacing group Victim_hood and dependency with individual initiative and personal responsibility.  Health, fitness and nutrition come to mind.

** Think about structured and patterned groups of threes as in the stable and functional milk stool.

*** Enjoy the wonders of nature.  Even the best designed, equipped and staffed NICU can not fully replace for the fetus an anatomically intact and physiologically normal maternal placental unit.  Think about the vital three.

**** Beware of the false analogy, the always imperfect metaphor, and predictions of the future.

Main:

In the first instance consider the cumulative results and consequences of adults gaining 1% of their body weight and losing 2% of their fittness per year over thirty years.
That is a poor allocation of resources, a bad bet, and a poor investment by any standard.

Second, even the smallest business requires solid financial services, a good accountant, and ongoing legal counsel to grow and prosper. Call this the Donna Summers formula for sustaining success.

Third, evolution has provided a complex and effective human reproductive mechanism to replenish species. But, the results are not alway perfect.

Fourth, communication is a major part of the human social, economic and cultural landscape. However, thoughts and words are far from complete, accurate, and truthful.
Action defines the human condition and the natural world provides both opportunities and pitfalls.  Meanwhile, look beyond the hype and the headlines and take a hike.

Legacy Journal: Friday Faceoff: Fitness, Forcasting, and a Free Ride --- to the White House?

Section:

Commentary

Summary:

“ It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” —Aristotle.

* Long time controversial Washington Post columnist psychiatrist, and former Mondale speech writer, Charles Krauthammer, has an critical eye for bad manners from people who should know better.  He has gone where others fear to tread and he writes about the cynical live TV debate Obama “ nice enough” remark directed toward Hillary Clinton.  Polled New Hampshire voters were not asked, nor would they reliably report, their reaction to the low brow blow.  Obama shot himself in the foot and probably paid a continuing price:  embarrassment, an likely wifely rebuke , and an altered public perception of the pol from Chicago. Meanwhile, for the pollster, who were 0 for 9 in New Hampshire, and the poll watching political junkies, it is out of there and on to South Carolina.

** Economic fitness and security has cycled to the fore.  Job and spending forecasts, fuel prices, costs of government entitlements, education, and an early year sloppy wall street marketplace are now front and center.

*** In the candidate winnowing process five case makers remain on the Republican side; three remain standing on the Democrat side and the endorsement phase of the campaign is underway.

Main:

Meanwhile:

:  President Boren of the the recently BSC Bowl chastened University of Oklahoma, and Mayor Blomberg of NYC are sounding like UN potentates, “ Stop the bickering and make nice with everyone.”

::  Mitt Romney will soon learn about how much love and support he has in Michigan.

:::  On this date in Rochester, NY, the record high was 56 in 1939.  The record low was -12 in 2004.  Today, the temperature is in the low 40’s.  Politically Correct Town of Brighton had a “Go Green
Campaign Kickoff evening this week.  The next morning winds downed power lines and freezers were off .  But is was RG&E to the rescue with emergency dry ice ( CO2) available at strategic locations.  We are curious about the possible adverse environmental impact of the C02 whether the Spanish owners purchased Carbon Credits at current market rates.  BTW, the FTC has started a fact finding process on the accountability and soundness carbon trading market system in the U.S.

:::: The kicker and really big news for today is the new machine for the masses, and a new polluter, the four door , 5 passenger Tata Nano introduced at the 12 day Auto-Expo in New Delhi, India attended by 1.2 million people.  The market is gigantic, 7 in a 1,000 Indian families has a car.  The good news is that once on the road they will be filled with people. The auto guys in Michigan know the game, but seem unsure if it wants to play in that league with the competitions ball.  They seem to mostly complain about the rules, the environment on the field and then change the coachs.

In Rochester and Brighton, most cars and service vehicles are 6 cylinder + and have one driver and no passengers. A significant number are driven by women grraduate and post doctoral students and working professionals from Asia, southern and eastern Europe, and the middle East.  Central and South American hispanics are also represented.  The evidence is on displace at mini-UN places like the Eastman General Dental Clinic at the URMC and the area campus like RIT and the University of Rochester.

Legacy Journal: The Russian Bear Facts, Competing California Style, and Romney Substance.

Section:

News: International

Summary:

“Beware of the Russian Bear! “—Winston Churchill.

Question: ? What country led the world in petroleum product exports before the beginning of the 20th century?  Who was Karl Popper?

* Time Magazine has name Russian turnaround artist, Vladamir Putin, as its Man of the Year. It is widely assumed that he was the compromise choice.  Al Gore was a runner-up. General Petrais, the architect of successful miliary the Surge Strategy in Iraq was an also ran.  Putin is portrayed as news worthy, smart in his marathon interviews, fearless, feisty, a pragmatic and proud nationalist, and combative at the age of 56.  Gore come across as --- well more concerned about a global human population that quadrupled in the past 100 years and is now collectively overheating the planet.  Meanwhile, Putin is putting cash in the cribs of new Russian citizens, building a fleet to ply ice free summer sea lanes in the Arctic Ocean, negociating gas pipe lines out of largely Muslim states of the former USSR, signing uranium deals with Australia, visiting Indonesia, working with neighboring Iran, working strategically for access pipeline and shipping access to warm water ports across a dozen time zones.  Worry about AGW?  Bring it on.  Alcohol as a Fuel?  Foolish.  Putin is blunt, quick, and on his game—winning were and when it matter for Russians.

** Barbara Boxer (D) Senator CA,, Chairperson, Committee on the Environment and Public Works responded angrily on the PBS News Hour to the EPA’s refusal to grant its 51st exemption request and waive federal law and allow California to continue authoring its own standards for tailpipe exhaust pollution.

*** The Charlie Gibson ABC Evening News interview with candidate Mitt Romney was generally well received. With Tancreto of Colorado dropping out of the race, Romney has now begun the first in what may be a slow and long series of former candidate endorsements. The last man standing at the time of the Republican National Convention will be progressing in the national polls and in the song book of the media chorus.  Will that be the case when the last woman standing is crowned with a Stetson at the Democratic National Convention in Denver?

Main:

:  Putin is diminutive, a fitness buf, and a Judo expert.

::  Senator Boxer is diminutive, aggressive, and supported by the nytimes Opinion Page Editorial writers. Arrogance and Warming is today, characterization of the issue.  Who has this one right. Gore? Boxer? the nytimes?  Putin?  It depends on your point of view.  If you are Russian, you have already place your short term bet, your future security, and your place in history on realpolitic men like Putin.

:::  Meanwhile, Mitt Romney is in a classic turnaround position.  Time, momentum, vigor, experience and teamwork are on his side. Witness the Jon Huntsman
Holiday giving factor.  Once again, insular, arrogance and myopic views of the world is not limited to one individual, one group or one institution.  The evidence: an ad hominem, anti-endorsement attack on candidate Romney in the Editorial Pages of a Concord, NH paper.

Answer:  Russia. No, we are not smarter than a 5th grader, but Popper was wise in the ways of Science.
