Summary:

“ It is the mark of an educated mind to be able to entertain a thought without accepting it.” —Aristotle.

* Long time controversial Washington Post columnist psychiatrist, and former Mondale speech writer, Charles Krauthammer, has an critical eye for bad manners from people who should know better.  He has gone where others fear to tread and he writes about the cynical live TV debate Obama “ nice enough” remark directed toward Hillary Clinton.  Polled New Hampshire voters were not asked, nor would they reliably report, their reaction to the low brow blow.  Obama shot himself in the foot and probably paid a continuing price:  embarrassment, an likely wifely rebuke , and an altered public perception of the pol from Chicago. Meanwhile, for the pollster, who were 0 for 9 in New Hampshire, and the poll watching political junkies, it is out of there and on to South Carolina.

** Economic fitness and security has cycled to the fore.  Job and spending forecasts, fuel prices, costs of government entitlements, education, and an early year sloppy wall street marketplace are now front and center.

*** In the candidate winnowing process five case makers remain on the Republican side; three remain standing on the Democrat side and the endorsement phase of the campaign is underway.

Main:

Meanwhile:

:  President Boren of the the recently BSC Bowl chastened University of Oklahoma, and Mayor Blomberg of NYC are sounding like UN potentates, “ Stop the bickering and make nice with everyone.”

::  Mitt Romney will soon learn about how much love and support he has in Michigan.

:::  On this date in Rochester, NY, the record high was 56 in 1939.  The record low was -12 in 2004.  Today, the temperature is in the low 40’s.  Politically Correct Town of Brighton had a “Go Green
Campaign Kickoff evening this week.  The next morning winds downed power lines and freezers were off .  But is was RG&E to the rescue with emergency dry ice ( CO2) available at strategic locations.  We are curious about the possible adverse environmental impact of the C02 whether the Spanish owners purchased Carbon Credits at current market rates.  BTW, the FTC has started a fact finding process on the accountability and soundness carbon trading market system in the U.S.

:::: The kicker and really big news for today is the new machine for the masses, and a new polluter, the four door , 5 passenger Tata Nano introduced at the 12 day Auto-Expo in New Delhi, India attended by 1.2 million people.  The market is gigantic, 7 in a 1,000 Indian families has a car.  The good news is that once on the road they will be filled with people. The auto guys in Michigan know the game, but seem unsure if it wants to play in that league with the competitions ball.  They seem to mostly complain about the rules, the environment on the field and then change the coachs.

In Rochester and Brighton, most cars and service vehicles are 6 cylinder + and have one driver and no passengers. A significant number are driven by women grraduate and post doctoral students and working professionals from Asia, southern and eastern Europe, and the middle East.  Central and South American hispanics are also represented.  The evidence is on displace at mini-UN places like the Eastman General Dental Clinic at the URMC and the area campus like RIT and the University of Rochester.

Legacy Journal:  Humor from Iowa

Section:

Politics

Summary:

IOWA : --- “The only state named after acronym”. At least it is easy to remember. —.

“After you learn to make ends meet, they move the ends.” --- Iowa born Herbert Hoover

* More humor from Iowa.

** What the rest of us know about Iowa and Iowans.

*** Iowa, the US, and the World.

Main:

:  What do you do if stuck in Iowa?  Go to the truck stop and trade really dumb jokes about Minnesota ice fishermen.

::  We know that Iowa has 99 counties, but can not name one of them.

:::  Iowa may not be the center of universe, but every four years candidate for high office energize Iowa caucus goers into believing they can “change the course of world history” if will just step out the front door, brave the elements, have some coffee and donuts with friends and neighbors , and cast the right vote.

Meanwhile, in case you missed in the first time, CBSNews and 60 Minutes had a rerun of raging fires in the summer of 2007 on public lands in the west. Climate change and something called fire ecology form the the subtext of the story. The backdrops are set in Arizona and the upscale retreat of Ketchum, Idaho near Sun Valley.

* drought because of ...
* global warming!

* risk to life and property caused by…
* massive mismanagement of fire control policy by the feds!

It is that simple and that is all you need to know, according to the reporter’s interviewees.  The dramatic primal fear pictures tell the story far more effectively than any science or time tested, peer reviewed reasoned and vetted analysis.

Disclosure: This journal writer confesses having spent time over the past 60 plus years living, working and playing outside in western forests, high mountains and dry sagebrush.  Living has included eastern and western Pacific Northwest, and northern and southern California. Working has included summers of firefighting and trail logging in the National Forests and working in sawmills and dry land cattle ranches.  Playing has included horseback trail riding, hiking, camping, hunting, fishing, Christmas tree finding, fire wood hauling, and photography in many of the western National Parks, Trails and Monuments in Nevada, Arizona, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah, and Montana. The most recent play time was during the summer of 2007 in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, the Salmon River north of Ketchum, Idaho, Teton and Yellowstone NP’s in Wyoming, and Paradise Valley in Montana.

Q: What has the Great Salt Lake and the “lake effect”
have to do with the snow fall in the Wasatch Mountains and the Alta and Park City, Utah ski resorts.?

A: Everything.

Q:  What are the current certification and academic standards for a “fire ecologist”?  What gives any one of them currency, credibility and standing?  What are the sources of their funding?  Where do they publish their work?

A: ????

Legacy Journal: The Golobal Warming Campaign Tour-- The Consequences

Section:

Weather

Summary:

We have recently noted some unintended consequences in the campaign of Crisis and Consequences starring Al Gore as Global Warming spokeman in chief.

Main:

* The only daily newspaper in the Adirondak region of northeastern NYS reports that the Gore campaign speech at Hamilton College in Clinton was met with mixed emotions by the skiing community.  They are conflicted by the appeal to the environment ,if the claims are true, and taking the action of abandoning their livelyhood of tourism and skiing.  That part of the country is cold in winter, the locals burn wood in their stoves, and are known to love snowmobiles and 4W SUVs.

Meanwhile neighbors like the writer, Bill McKibben, seems to be doing well while continuing his long green campaign of lowing expectations.

* Today it is reported that part of the Yellowstone 3,500 head herd of bison has wandered off the reservation and onto private, low elevation haystack lands. Some have logically resisted attempts to “ haze” them back to grey wolf land.  In theory, bison and their young would stay in N.P. wolf land high country if mild winters left the feed uncovered.

* The early and “unprecedented” breakup of Artic sea ice in the North Atlantic has trapped and disrupted the northern migration trawlers filled by Canadian baby seal fur hunters. The sea rescue operation apparently included abandoning some of the craft and returning to safe harbor via rescure helicopter .

Meanwhile the temperature today in Davis is reported by the perky Weather ladies in Sacramento as both “below average” and “below normal” The same is true of the Sierra snowpack, but because the pack was “ above average and above normal” last year, the water resevoirs are full while the levees on the rivers were not breeched and the good people were spared the floods that were forecast and feared.

* We do not know about the connection with long term climate, but we were informed this morning that the number of Americans dying directly or indirectly from lightning is increasing and was 300 last year. How many occurred on golf courses was not stated.

* The nytimes reports price of a gallon of milk is rising faster and now exceed th posted price of a gallon of gasoline.  Feed corn diverted to produce ethyl alcohol for fuel is the reason.  Cheap fortified adult beverages will be another of the unintended consequences of subsidized overproduction and the rush to riches by some.  Unfortunately, St. Louis Cardinal pitchers are not the only victims of mixing alcohol and driving. It is enought to put a frown on your forehead.

* At least Laurie David and Sheryl Crowe used a biodiesel powered bus on the latest Global Warming tour.  However, given their jet setting, there is no way that these ladies are close be being carbon or politically neutral any time soon.

Legacy Journal: A salute to Google

Section:

Science and Technology

Summary:

“ Where in the world is that American airbase that supports the UN mission in Afganistan?”

Yesterday Google stock was up 5%.  Today we installed the Google’s newest service, Custom Site Search.  We call it LegacyLog Search.  Users will call it sweet but lean.  Even President Bush likes Google Earth.  Don’t we all.  Geography is back on the front burner.

Main:

On the front burner in Davis is the good news that leafy greens, antioxidants and phytochemicals are good for memory retention. That is very good news for the lettice and spinach growers and shippers of the Salinas Valley.  The local markets in Yolo County have been clearing their shelves of the stuff recently and sending it to the local Free Food programs.

Meanwhile, the training tables and Dining Halls of Davis will be featuring local produce at the dinner meal tomorrow.  We expect the senior Nutrition and Food Science faculty to be out in force.  The UCDavis students seem to be partial to ice cream and handle the calories well according to the latest data on the relative infrequency of the fabled freshman fifteen.  Workouts, sports, the mirror and snug jeans have a way of controlling the tale of the scales.

Now, about the profile of some University faculty and administrators, there appears to be ample room for improvement.

Legacy Journal: Friday the 13th Notes

Section:

Markets

Summary:

“If markets are not free, correct pricing is not possible"-- Milton Friedman

Main:

Recent events on the campus of the University of California at Davis have verified the fact that many academics tend to mistrust, misinterpret or not care about markets.

Take water in California for example.  An academic group at UCDavis, the John Muir Institute, is a free floating thinktank of enviromental mavens, communicators and sales persons. They have a website, accept donations, sponsor and attend conferences, testify before committees of the California Legislature, build computer models of complex systems, lecture at interest group gatherings, write papers, conduct field studies, consult as experts for litigators and occasionally teach undergraduate students.

One of these rushing and breathless types has observed that California has more than 300 water districts and agencies that control water access and flow from the Sierra snowpac to the foothills, the valley, the delta, and the sea.  At least as many academic disciplines study both the proposals and projects of man and the dispensations of nature.

Meanwhile, the topdown planning philosophy of a French king’s watermeister is contrasted with the invisible hand of Adam Smith. That polarization frames the public debate over the proper allocation of one of Callifornia’s most treasured and discussed resources, fresh water.

Still, one is left to wonder.  In heat of Global Climate Change, is the Great Central Valley destined to reflood. become a desert, a giant golf course, or a mega stripmall?  All the profs can agree on is that change and disagreement is in the air.  Plus, their jobs are secure for as far as the eye can see.

Q: So, who pays the bill for water use and regulation?

A: All who pay taxes and user fee.

Meanwhile, Yosemite Falls continues to have a record flow, Lake Tahoe clarity has been stable for five years, the months of August and September in Sacramento had no 100 degree peaks, the Davis municipal water utility bills are starting hit seniors hard, and the levees that allow deep water shipping in and out of Sacramento and Stockton are doing well.

California Climate: CO2 Connections and Corrections

Section:

Politics

Summary:

A promise made is a debt unpaid.... a Scots pledge.

It is all politics” is a common Davis refrain about the antics of the local City Council persons and the legislators in nearby Sacramento.

The latest is the legislative, end of session capstone triangulation called the GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTION ACT.  Assemby Speaker, Fabian Nuniez of Los Angeles is quoted by the nytimes as saying that the act will “make California CO2free!” That is not good news for live California persons and plants. A nonsmoker, I inhale air that is 0.03% carbon dioxide and exhale air that is 20% “toxic”.  Plants thrive in the stuff but they to not read, vote or live in the L.A. basin at last report.

Main:

Clearly, the pols spend more time reading the polls than reviewing their 9th grade physical science.  The really bad news is that the nytimes has the political report from Sacramento in its Science Section.  Perhaps the reporter, FELICITY BARRINGER, has a degree in Political Science.

That is kind of the odd way Californian are making connections these days:  For example, all respected and serious folks from Stanford believe that:

* Carbon dioxide is toxic.

* Dry ice. volcanos, and earth quakes should be banned from the state.

* Cement should be imported from Mexico.

* Fossil fuel generated electrical energy should be imported from places like Canada, Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Montana.

* Refineries and methane producing dairy cow should be relocated from Alviso to Texas and Arizona.

* Northwest water should be legislated to run up hill, over the Siskiyous into the California Water Project system.

* Summer energy peak demand is caused by all those other folks cooling their homes and offices, and charging their electric vehicles.

* Those who disagree may be subject to an Enviromental Defense Fund class action suit.

Meanwhile, the Sacramento area has a new weather first.  No triple digit days in August!  Plus, the reservoirs and lakes are full and flooding was minimal.

The Golden State is indeed blessed to have a professional political class so ready to save us from ourselves, share our pain, calm our fears of imminent natural disasters and tap into each of our sensibilities as the way the natural world works.  Now ,if we could only do something about those Coke machines dispensing deadly carbonated beverages at Toomey Field on the UCD campus, the world would be a better, safer and more just place.  Truth can find a lowere place in the grand order of priorities.

Thinking in the Drink: Global Warming Humor

Section:

Cartoons

Summary:

So who says you can not have a sense of humor? This is one response to the announced “Celebrate Global Warming Day.” At least humor is a well woren way to warm up your audience before delivering the heavy moral message.

Main:

The Ten Best Things about Global Warming:

10. Why pay for tattoos when melanoma’s free?
9.  No more pesky weeds. In fact, no more pesky plants.
8.  Nile Encephalitis: not just for Egyptians anymore.
7.  Furnaces convert easily into tornado shelters.
6.  Helsinki: the new Riviera.
5.  Middle East oil producers feel right at home— everywhere.
4.  Golfers only need a putter and a sand wedge.
3.  For those who can’t get enough of global warming. One word: Venus.
2.  Steaks, medium rare, on the hoof.
1.  Three thongs and you’re dressed!

Meanwhle, the search to find someone in the Davis, UCD community who has actually bought and read the Al Gore book, An Uncomfortable Truth continues.  However, is is easy to find professors , wildlife specialists and ecology experts that are packing for trips and conferences in east Africa that just happen to be near MT.Kilimanjaro in Tanzania.  Most eco-tourists and game hunters travel by jet plane and Land Rover.  Few will be exchanging their safari jackets for thermal wear and a climb to the 19,800 ft top to take some natural disitial pictures “nonenhanced” by artful Photoshop editing.
