Legacy Journal:080808: The China Olympic Games

Section:

Sports

Summary:

So far the media as covered its own version the first Olympics to be conducted in China. That version has been built around contrived controversy from the start: human rights, minority protests, security suffocation, environmental pollution, demonstrations, disruptions, displacement, performance enhancement, the presumed pressure of “representing one’s country” on poised 16 female gymnasts.

Main:

For example:

* More NBC coverage was given to a former minor U.S.Olympian who had his passport revoked by China when he stated his goal of using the occasion of the Games as a
global podium for protesting Sudan human right violations in Darfur.

* A recently nationalized black African will be he standard bearer for the U.S. team at the Games opening ceremonies.

* Today, prior to entering China to attend the ceremonies, President Bush made public statements pointing to the PRC’s unsatisfactory record on rights.

* Some U.S. cyclists deplaned into the country wearing filtering air masks.

* Local food sources have been suspect and frozen Tyson’s chicken has been imported from Arkansas.

* We can only speculate on the source of water for locally bottled Coca Cola, of McDonald’s hamburger, of piazza in the Village, and Phelps breakfast fuel--- pancakes.

* Meanwhile, it has been announced that China is the second leading auto market in the world, that Chevys are flying off the show room floors, and the Marlbaro man is alive and well in China.  But, Viagra has not replaced rhino horn in the traditional Chinese medicine shops.

Legacy Journal: Race, Coals to Newcastte, and Wednesday Technology

Section:

Commentary

Summary:

* Race Matters:  At a recent URMC New York Society of Cardiology CO-hosted lectureship on the state of genomic research and technology in health, disease and in the retail consumer market, one was able to witness a race based concern.  “Why are there not more African-Americans in the studies?” was the question from the only black practitioner in the audience. “ Why are some of the studies not coming from Africa?” No satisfying answer was forthcoming from the expert from California. While the largest private employer in Rochester NY is URMC, ironically, it is dependent on the black community to staff and operate its facilities 24 x 7 x 365.  The residents living in the home of Fredrick Douglass has heard and seen it all.  The black church, failing inner city public schools, crime in the neighborhoods, limited job opportunities in a street environment rife with petty and organized crime, substance abuse, abandoned property.  High taxes, political patronage, and union restrictions are long standing facts of life that colors much of the black perspective.

** Coal:

*** RIT CMIS :  Manufacturing technology institute funded by the Federal Government, the state of New York, and private industry.

Main:

:  A new black Superintendent of Public Schools, a new black Governor, and a new black President will not qwell “prophetic” rhetoric from the pulpit, balance the state budget, or eliminate a 200 year old backlog of white guilt.  Barak Obama may be perfect poetic fusion messenger to the new generation of American voters, but he can not govern well or effectively , if he is viewed as pandering to the rapidly fading black leadership elites and their supporters-- and they know who they are.

::  Coal production and export report from the nytimes..

:::  CIMS is the Center for Integrated Manufacturing Studies on the RIT campus in Rochester, NY.

Today a OLLI tour group got a dose of sustainability, a lesson in manufacturing, and a perspective on a post Kodak western upstate NY economy. Locally, part of
the manufacturing view of green sustainability is part rehabilitation and waste management.  Quality control , systems management of the product cycle, and energy efficiency is part of the package.  One demonstration bay had a half million dollar articulated arm laser surface scanner for image input for product design.

Most of the projects are small simulations and tests of critical mechanical parts like aircraft hydolic systems and gearboxes.

Legacy Journal: William F. Buckley

Section:

Politics

Summary:

William F. Buckley, Jr and John F. Kennedy both visited Eugene and the University of Oregon in 1959-60.  Both were impressive men to those of us who were young sophomores and unsophisticated, small town country rubes. We knew we has seen the elephant.

Main:

We did read the newspaper and watch B&W TV so were were aware of the that writer Buckley was tilting the windmills of Godless Yale University.  Kennedy was preparing his bold move from the Senate to the White House.

Both were tall, tanned, elegant, articulate, and to the manor born. The Ivy League was part of their shared pedigree.

WFB’s UofO forum was the Fishbowl in the Student Union where he spoke without notes in patrician tones about what, I do not recall.  But his style was memorable.  His tailored suit was without a crease, the knot of his tire was just right, his posture and diction were perfect, his message was cool, clear and logical.

JFK’s college appearance was a quick Q&A with a small campus group gathered at the cramped studio of the campus radio station.

Legacy Journal: Mormonism, Coal, and New Hampshire Polls

Section:

Politics

Summary:

“We live in the midst of alarms; anxiety beclouds the future; we expect some new disaster with each newspaper we read.” ---- Abe Lincoln.

image

Mitt Romney is drawing media attention in New Hampshire. One New Hampshire newspaper editorial has labelled him a phoney, a nytimes reporter, Noah Feldman, is compelled to ask provocative questions and then call attention to Mormon polygamy and the “ idiocycracy” of clean living by avoiding tobacco, caffeine and alcohol. Does he also consider the lack of gambling and lotteries in Utah (and Hawai) as troublesome as the Judaic kosher food tradition?  In addition, Romney is also enviromental “inconvenient”.  He calls for a national energy stategy that includes liquid coal, increasing the supply of heating oil by building refinery capacity, and investing in nuclear energy.  The voters of New Hampshire are concerned about the winter price and availability of fuel oil, and the future costs of electricity.

Main:

The good news is that the media, including the press, is much more restrained than in the political days of Lincoln and cartoonist Thomas Nast.  Journalism is also sophisticated, subtile, and scientific in the arts of advertising, influencing, and choice making

* For example, GMA today reported from New Hampshire on a mind mapping “truth” gizmo that records a graphic image of emotional responses to messages and images of events, products, and people.  Is this the new brave world of political “science”?

** One of the world’s most costly construction project will be done by a Canadian firm.  It is a gas pipeline from the north to the hub in Calgary, Alberta.

*** Meanwhile, fear mongering, narrow mindedness and group think is alive and well in the free, but not cheap, mass media.

Legacy Journal:  Three Complex Systems: Genome, Climate, Governance

Section:

Education

Summary:

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing

Three big things that are important, complex and incompletely understood by experts: As Einstein put it, “explanations should be as simple as possible — but no simpler”.  And, “ one fact can demolish a beautiful theory”.

* First, The Genome: It makes you, me, and most of the remaining six billion of us, unique in our appearance and our chemistry. It is the Science story of the year.  So, what do SNPs, HapMaps, and copy number variation have to do with the uniqueness of you, me, and the quilt work that contributes variety to the spice of life?

** Second, Climate Change: Forecasting is scientifically treacherous ground.  Here are ten examples that illustrates that point.

*** Third, Governance:  Today, the politically fixated media would have us know that the world is in “Disarray” with a regrettable assassination attempt and possible accidental head injury of the “chairwoman for life” of a powerful Pakistan political party who has been compared to Indira Nehru Ghandi and St. Joan .  True, politics and governance are frequently messy and even chaotic.  However, foreign chaos does not necessarily lead to disorder and confusion on the bridge of the American ship of state

image

Main:

Facts, Analysis, Conclusions, and Action (Change, Behavior, Adaptation---etc) often change.  Change is frequently comfortable and slow, here we go.

: There is far more diversity in the Human Genome than was thought by many active researchers in 2006.

:: So, who is surprised that bad decisions are often rationalized by frail data, faulty logic, and irrational analysis when it comes to predicting the future.  The results can be destabilizing, even disorienting.  Consider the case of the High School Science guy in Oregon and his < 10 minute You tube explanation of “climate destabilization”.  Scary? No. Concerning? Yes.  Reportedly, his obsession has been followed by at least one ER visit because of chest pain, a leave of absence from his Chemistry and Physics classes, and a move to Corvallis. Can we assume that this 30 something year old father of two rides a bicycle: to work? to the mall? to his doctor’s appointment?

:::  Pakistan is a different place than NYC, Washington, DC, London, Paris, Bonn, the Debating Halls of the EU Parliament, and the UN General Assembly.  It has been and will continue to be a threatening, dangerous, and corrupt place.  Culture and strategic location make Pakistan one of the world’s PMASS counties. The Western Powers, Islamic leaders, and India have long been aware of Pakistan and concerned about its deployment of nuclear capabilities under military, technocratic civilian, or God Willing theocratic rule.

Finally, there is the evolving story of the young female Siberian Tiger that escaped from her open moated exhibit at the San Francisco Zoo, climbed a wall thought by officials to be 16 ft high, and killing a young man shortly after the dusky zoo closing time of 5:00 P.M.  After measuring, the wall is now reported to be closer to 12.5 ft. high.  Some say a 20 feet standard is safer.  Settling in the sand?  Shorting on the concrete?  Natural weathering and erosion?  Police reported the animal died of bullets they fired after responding to a series of confusing 911 calls.

Legacy Journal: Mitt Romney: the HD Man

Section:

News: National

Summary:

Mitt Romney is emerging one the authentic HD primary candidates for president.

Main:

The PBS Lehrer News Hour has gone HD just in time for the political candidates to send out their videos. Christmas messages.  The critics and pundits who life and die covering domestic campaign and elective politics have been quick to weigh in. Some spots appear spontaneous, authentic, and smart. Others are judged to be contrived, scripted, and dumb.

We think that Huckabee and Romney will both benefit in the dawning HD video world.
