Legacy Journal: Saturday Samplings
Section:
Briefs
Summary:
Briefly Noted:
* The eastern press continues to be confused and conflicted as it tries to get its collective self around the Alaskan state of mine. The latest is a stakeout on several churches in Wasilla
** Meanwhile, the political investigative press has no problem in dissecting and digesting the latest new on NYC Dem Congressional Committee Chairman Charlie Rangle. He failed to report income from his Dominican Republic ocean side resort hideaway. Plus, it was purchased with a nice interest free loan.
*** Vice President Cheney is in the republic of Georgia as aid is delivered by U.S. naval ships via an eastern Black Sea post that is close to the loading terminus of a trans Georgia oil pipeline.
**** Bob Woodward has a new tome on the workings of the outgoing administration. Surprise, that administration was interested in what world heads of state were saying. Most schools of Journalism call that good reporting; others brand it spying.
***** The Obama campaign and the DNC are recruiting a paid army of voter registration workers. Unregistered young, mobile, poor, and new US residents are the targeted demographic. It is well known in California that that profile means Hispanic LA Raza power at the polls.
****** Professional political pollsters do not work for free, but have a worse record of predicting reliable results than the local weather forecasters.
Main:
Yes, we know it all along:
- Childhood immunizations to not cause autism.
- As many as 20% of Hillary Clinton spring primary voters are leaning to the McCain ticket in the fall.
- Extreme weather, like hurricanes, is always newsworthy and is used to come without a political conventional wisdom label.
- Lehman Bros, Fannie Mae Freddie Mac and People’s Bank of China play in the same league and have the same needs. Quick cash and credit equivalents.

Legacy Journal: The facts on Global Warming
Section:
Book Reviews
Summary:
Freeman Dyson, FRS, the Princeton Theoretical Physicist, often writes for the public on science. He has a recent review for the New York Review of Books of two publications on the Question of Global Warming.">Question of Global Warming.
Main:
Dyson quotes the motto of the British Royal Society, translated by some as “ Let the Facts Speak”, in a section devoted to the prevailing intolerance and ostricism by elites in political power towards scientists who express skepticism regarding the current British administration’s stance on the issue of Global Warming: its cause, its nature, and its cure.
Predictably, Dyson begins his piece by giving the back of his hand to climate speculation by some scientists, computer models, and policy groups. He votes in favor data mined from the field of “precise observation science” like the Keeling Curve ---- in all its shapes?

Legacy Journal:Weather Futures
Section:
Environment
Summary:
* Apparently, there is uncertainty and market risk in the weather. Using the Chicago Exchange, snow shovel manufacturers are able to hedge their inventory by purchasing a form of insurance called a weather future. Business is reported to be brisk.
** Meanwhile, snow and cold continues across the county.
*** The flag at the local Mormon gathering place is still a half mast with the passing of the LDS leader.

Legacy Journal: Final Friday: Sure Things for 2008
Section:
FrontPage
Summary:
* Super Bowl Sunday means Buffalo Wing sales will soar in Rochester, New York.
* The country is experiencing widespread freezing weather in the heartland, record precipitation in the west, chilly nights in the a hurricane free season in the Gulf, and a near absence of voter, media candidate concern about AGW. Will there be an Al Gore spot ad in Super Sunday? Not likely. The issue is down around # 16th on the priority list.
* The rate of growth of the $14.6 trillion GDP is slowing. But, employers are competing for reliable employees with the necessary personal qualities, technical skills, and experience. The real story of the American story is told by those in line on the outside seeking an personal or family chance at a once in a lifetime opportunity than many US citizens take for granted. Immigration demographics are increasing, not decreasing.
* Voters for the national ticket in November may have Democrat bonus choice: Three for the price of One. Come on down.
* Expect a high gloss, high cost, high profile TV and endorsement blitz and buzz for the next ten daze. The haze of campaign may be the next step in the degradation of the environment by noise pollution and jet contrails.
*
Main:
: Medical Care costs about 16% of the GDP or over $2 trillion. Some what a federally funded Universal Medical System at a matter of “Right” based on the British National Health Service. On the other hand, the American system is also fueling research, expansion of hospital beds, capital investment and a talent magnet in the service sector of the economy. Media advertising , Big Pharma profits , Medical Foundation non profit trust funds, and executive compensation also seem to have benefited.
:: Hillary Rodham Clinton is long off her Saul Alinski and Wal- Mart SOAP box gigs. She has now gone national with her campaign. Her organizing network in upstate New York is impressive, her hold in California is formidable, and she is portrayed as respected in Arkansas.
::: Meanwhile, everybody over the age of 30 who make their living off the little screen is trembling before the HD switch over. The darn thing shows wrinkles after all.
:::: Fast fact checkers and caught on tape moments will continue to fuel the cheap instant analysis part of covering the campaign.

Legacy Journal: Going Green on Sunday TV: Melting Ice, Football , and Primary Coverage
Section:
TV
Summary:
* On this Football Sunday, two NYC heavy weights , CBS and the NYTimes are on the same page. Both are rerunning that old green melting ice story yet again. Are the 60 Minutes writers on strike? Perhaps the nytimes editorial staff are visiting a handy hideout this weekend.
** During the Sunday prime time viewing slot, New Yorkers will be joining the rest of the country to watch the surprising Giants play a night game against the Packers in Green Bay. Burr.
*** Are the Sunday morning Political News folks missing something or do they really like traveling and reporting twice from South Carolina to cover the separate party primaries. It must be a way of priming the pump of the local travel and hospitality services. Meanwhile, who is covering events in Europe this week? The Secretary of State of off to annual Davos economic meeting in Switzerland. She is also doing some Brussels business.
We also note that the 2009 US Presidential inauguration is exactly one year away.
Main:
: CBS Sunday Morning is looking long in the tooth. Aging rocker and former drug user David Crosby is not the picture of good health since his liver transplant, even against the scenic backdrop of his California vineyards and leisurely sailing the Pacific Ocean.
:: The temperature today in Rochester peaked at 19 degrees.
::: Economics, Business and Trade are being to move front and center in local and regional discussions. The Governor of New York has visited upstate New York to deliver a regional economic state of the state address in Buffalo, which has the highest unemployment rate among the 10 leading jobs reporting regions in the state. Westchester county in down state NY fairs best at 3.3%

Legacy Journal: Real Cold in Carolina, Coal, and ABR
Section:
Almanac
Summary:
* Some media pundits are predicating that the weather in the northwest corner of South Carolina may effect the Huckaby turnout. They may not be aware of the North Dakota effect. A National Geographic writer made the mistake of appearing to dis the state in a recent article. The temperate response of the state’s citizenry and leadership prompted Charlie Gibson of ABC News to name the state “Person of the Week” Have a good weekend.
** Scots have been using coal for a long time. Coal, iron and willing workers helped build the railroad lines that allowed the for the rapid and reliable delivery of mail, newspapers and people a throughout the British Isles. Books publishing flourished and station book sales boomed as a result.
*** Meanwhile, look for a ABR movement early this year. It will have stealthy and crafty anti-Mormon tone. But, it is a dangerous and unpopular tactic. Recently, the grandson of M. Gandhi, a resident of Brighton, NY was asked to resign his position with a University of Rochester affiliated peace and non-violence foundation after he wrote a web piece offensive to local Jews with holocaust sensitivities.
Main:
: Folks in most parts of the country are not intimidated by weather. Nor are they fearful of cyclic ice age climate change that moves at a glacial geologic creeping pace.
A recent biography of van Allen of Iowa has a picture of him and other scientists working on defense related missile and satellite research at the South Pole in 1958 where the average temperature was reported as - 58 degrees. His former grad student, James Hanson of NASA Goddard is not mentioned in the book.
:: The slums of Glasgow, Scotland were fertile recruiting grounds for early Mormons including Brigham Young. The Eccles family is one example. Mariner Eccles was in the FDR administration and was part of the first draft of the Federal Reserve System.
::: And yes, there is a small book out on the life and record of Mitt Romney. Predictably, it is modest, polite, and plain spoken.
:::: And aside. The Swedish firm, MySQL will become part of Sun Micro of Silicon Valley. To the best of our knowledge, the deal is Carbon Neutral.

Legacy Journal: Monday Previews
Section:
FrontPage
Summary:
“Physicists like to think that all you have to do is say, these are the conditions, now what happens next?” --- Richard Feynman
* This morning, national ABC TV Weatherman Sam Champion was forecasting from snow storm central, Rochester, NY. The area is 300% above normal snow fall for this date in the season. One third of the normal seasonal quota has already been filled and winter has not officially started! But, raw numbers can be misleading. At 0800 the sun was out and the sky was cloudless. Some schools closed, others were open. Folks were out to work, clearing, shoveling, plowing and shopping.
** During the last week, there was one day without a US troop death. Is the surge working? At the John Wooden Classic MBB in Indianapolis, Purdue hosted and defeated rated Louisville and Rich Patino while starting four freshmen. Therefore, are rankings misleading? Wooden is reported to have graduated 19th in his class at a time Purdue had 4,000 students. His first job after graduation was as a classroom English teacher at a small high school.
*** Meanwhile, billions of dollars are being pledged to help jump start a new state of Palestine, new species have been discovered and described regularly in remote, barely explored places like the highlands of New Guinea, and the quality of life and the choices available has never been better for more people.
Main:
Meanwhile, guilt, uncertainty, and fear continue, as usual. Understanding positive parts of the three News Summaries are part of the antedote.
: Above and below normal or average is common and not a cause for concern. Take the weather. Complex system events like winds, ocean currents, cloud formation, precipitation patterns and temperature variation are like many events in the natural world where change and chaos are in play. Predication and forecasting are difficult even with real time monitoring, massive computer modeling by the NWB, and constant updating of data. General patterns do exist, but the action on the ground is usually very locale specific and novel. What is true in downtown Rochester, or next to Lake Ontario may well not apply a mile south over the hill in Brighton’s Summit Dr. neighborhood. Furthermore, preliminary results reported by numbers like 1/3 d and 300% do not indicate trends that will continue for the remainder of the season. The same is true of the early season non-conference road record of the basketball Cardinal team.
:: And that brings us to Coach Wooden and sport. To the best of my knowledge, he has never run for public office, been appointed to a position of power and privilege, lived a life of ease and luxury, or been paid for a product endorsement. He has written a simple book of Wooden Wisdom. So, what makes him and others different from many in the current Y generation?
::: So, some critics and cynics focus on the failures of the past, others chose to travel the tough, slow, uncharted road to peace in the Middle East. One such traveler is football fan, the U.S. Secretary of State, Dr. Condoleezza Rice. Another person of character is the ant guy, E. O. Wilson. He has written that fewer than 25% of the worlds species have been discovered, described, named, archived and studied.
And finally, who can fail to be impressed by the demonstrated virtue of Charity and giving by the American public.
