Legacy Journal: Iowa: The Purple State

Section:

Politics

Summary:

Iowa is often thought of a red, white, and blue representative of Heartland Americana.  The results of state’s 2007 Republican and Democrat party bruising caucus competiton is more some shade of purple ,lavender, or lilac.  Black and yellow are Hawkeye colors, but big city Illinois was a big winner, and The Oprah factor may have played a role.  Apparently, the Harlem based lieutenant -governor of NY, the Latino mayor of Los Angeles, the former Secretary of State in the Clinton administration, and the collection of labor bosses that attended the Hillary “victory celebration” in Iowa were visibly stunned by results.

Main:

The state’s anti-war, isolationist streak once again surfaced.  The Quad Cities and Des Moine media center appears to have influential, but not decisive.

On the Republican side, the two leaders, Huchabee and Romney shared 59% of the secret Republican party caucus vote. Three others, Guliani, Thompson and Paul, shared 41%. On the Democrat side, the three candidates standing shared 97% at end of the evening rounds of non secret balloting.

So, the conclusions are:

:  The 1% of Iowans who are potential voters in the national presidential vote in November are not good at voting the next leader of the Free World.
They did not vote for native son and California transplant, Ronald Reagan, in 1980.  The follow on folks in the Granite state did.

::  Iowan’s are not pleased with the Clinton legacy, influenced by the Clinton machine, nor swayed by the Clinton money.

:::  Push poll tactics had a negative reaction in Iowa.

::::  As of New Hampshire and ABC TV showcase, five Republicans and three Democrats are still standing.

Legacy Journal: Friday Focus: The Big Picture: Water, Peace and War

Section:

Climate Change

Summary:

“Anyone who can solve the problems of water will be worthy of two Nobel prizes - one for peace and one for science.” ------ John F. Kennedy.

“A man from the west will fight over three things: water, women and gold, and usually in that order.” ----------- Senator Barry Goldwater, AZ

Main:

Congrats to Albert Gore, Jr, CO-winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Peace. Today, he acknowledged the news from Palo Alto, California after hearing the news at his S.F condo.  He is an Apple Director, he has an NGO climate group, the Alliance for Climate Protection, video business interests, including Current TV , and fund raising operations in the Bay Area.  His growing Silicon Valley, Washington, D.C. and Hollywood profile has now truly gone global.

The science of Climate Change, the politics of Global Warming , and the associated business opportunities are now ready to deal with the big issues of Peace and War.

One beneficiary has been to refocus attention on the that wonderful recycled resource, water.  Regardless the state of the planet, water in the right place, at the right time, in the right quantity, the right purity and the right state is critical to the continuing improvement in the quality of the human condition.

Control of water sources is key to understanding on going global disputes:  the Israeli - Lebanon conflict over the Golan Heights, The Kurdish interests in north eastern Turkey and northern Iraq, and provincial tribalism in southern Afghanistan.

The net effect of weather and changing climate on predictable water supplied is part of the concern and fear associated with uncertainty about the future.

Meanwhile, while only 1% of the world’s water is vapor in the atmosphere at any one moment, That 1% is a significant part of the mechanism known as the “ Green House Effect, and what we know as clouds, rain and snow fall.

The reports of early snow in the Sierra and the Cascades has given hope for an early start to ski season and for the restoration of California’s water source.

Legacy Journal: Global Medicine: A view from Rochester

Section:

Health and Medicine

Summary:

“Prevention is better than cure”.--------------- Desiderius Erasmus

Tuesday is Medical Grand Rounds Day at Strong Memorial Hospital and the University of Rochester.  This is also the week that the Nobel Prize for Medicine winners, for the developing the “knockout mouse model” widely used in gene investigation, are announced.  At Strong, this morning was given over to clinical and basic science poster presentations and competition. It is no surprise that the main participants included many immigrant students and physicians from Italy, South Korea, India, etc.

Main:

Young medical school graduates emigrating from India, joining university affiliated training programs in the United States, and seeking practice opportunities around the country is not new.  In Rochester, two Internal Medicine residents from the Unity Health System, via Bombay presented posters in the competition.  One was a study of the acute cardiovascular effects of life threatening scorpion bites in 150 young adults transferred to a tertiary care center in India. Patient transportation from India was via land, not via helicopter. Medical public health statistic are better in the states of the south and along the coast and in the northern interior states. Residents from the affiliated Rochester General Hospital also had presentations.

Several facts are clear.

* Many of the presentations were case reports of infrequent complications of effective drug therapies in frail and vulnerable individuals.  One report may help make the case for the extended use of medical procedure centers that are equipped with proper monitoring equipment, staffed by a dedicated group of nurses, and run by hospital based specialists.  This appears to be a trend with the usual cadre of detractors and turf guardians.

* The numbers of patients included in many of the studies could not be duplicated at any research or patient care facility in the U.S.

* The young men and women were articulate in English, well trained in medicine, presented themselves well, and intended to seek additional training in high tech Cardiology, Nephrology, etc.

* Training at Unity Hospital and Rochester General includes an affiliation with the University of Rochester and a clinical rotation to Strong Memorial.

* It is not unusual for U.S. medical students with an interest in infectious disease to do intense clinical clerkships in India and other Asian locations.

Other posters included single case reports, unusual complications, practical tips on frequently encountered problems in managing acute and chronic disease. and bibliographies that review the relevant medical literature.  No mouse gene models were on display.

As always, drug detail persons were present on the floor.

BTW, the nytimes, that for many years opposed the manufacture and distribution of pesticides, including DDT from the west to poor countries, today has a report from Africa on the effectiveness of pesticide impregnated sleeping nets in helping to dramatically reverse 3d world death rates from malaria carried by mosquitoes.  The Gates Foundation, Unicef, and USAid are helping to remount the campaign against preventable infectious disease among poor ,young blacks and Asian.  We would hope that those who continue to view early death from disease as a sure quick cure for global “population explosion” based carbon and ecology “footprint” pressure would update their demographic curves, reevaluate the moral basis of their claims, and expose themselves to the negative public reaction to their pervasive pessimism.

Meanwhile, immigration is continuing hot topic as the voting season is fast approaching and California continues to roll as biotechnology startups and institutions like Berkeley, UCSF and Stanford continue to attract money and talent from around the world according to a recent PBS News Hour report.

Legacy Journal: The Y Generation

Section:

Essays

Summary:

This year’s Time Magazine Person of the Year is ------ You!  So, Who should be surprised that the technology challenged and union bound print media should be whistling in the dark past the Cemetery as they face the wild west of the new Internet.

Main:

The potential of Web 2.0 open source on the Internet is for everyone to be on the scene all the time.  So why send a reporter from the Hub to cover the story in the field.  There is already someone there with laptop, camera and a wireless connection to the world.  RSS moves the story to subscribers.

Meanwhile, the Youth Generation is not the only one on the You wavelength.  Stay tuned for new stuff here in early 2007.

Legacy Journal: Local Elections, the Morning After

Section:

Politics

Summary:

In the clear light of a gorgeous, warm sunny day in Davis, there were mixed reactions to the local, regional, state and national election results.

Target, PG&E and city proportional voting won.  Targeted taxes to support education, alternative fuels and anti smoking interest groups lost.

Meanwhile, America will be waiting two months before getting to know the new slate of committee chairpersons in the new Congress.  The wait was shorter to be introduced to the new Secretary of Defense nominee, Robert Gates, the President of Texas A & M.

Main:

In addition Congresswoman Pelosi of San Francisco and Senator Read of Nevada are now in the heat of the Washington leadership klieg lights.

Legacy Journal: Whats Hot in Davis

Section:

Alerts

Summary:

What is hot from the Valley point of view:

Main:

San Francisco is known as “The City”; there is also “The Valley”, as in the Great Valley of California.

The town of Davis is centrally located between The City and Sacramento near the delta confluence where the Sacramento and the San Joaquin Rivers turn west to join the Bay.

* Buses and the Capitol Corridor commuter trainline are Hot. The student run campus Bus system moves campus students, public school students and other residents all around town and includes stops near the Amtrak station and connecting points with other bus system including:  Yolo county buses to Sacramento and the International Airport, Solano buses to Fairfield, UCDavis buses to the Sacramento UCD Medical Center, and UC Buses to UC Berkeley.  In addition, Amtrak buses connect with Modesto and Stockton.

* Ski fitness training is in. Nordic Walking training for ARC student employees started today in preparation for the Sierra Ski Season and the winter quarter offerings at the ARC.  Nordic rollerbladeing is part of the progression.

* USC Trojans and Oregon State Beavers PAC 10 football game from Corvillis was hot and on the big HD screen at the Graduate. It was was a three ring event with an OSU trifecta with Oregon State, Ohio State and Oklahoma State fans banding as brothers this the Aggie folks to help beat the Trojans.

* Meanwhile, it is time to reset the clock and start enjoying the super sunrises from the Arroyo Pool at the DAMfast.org 0545 swimming workout.

* For a furthur lift, Bill Bryson and his memoir of the Thunderbold Kid is worth a read and a chuckle.  His humor is just the right antedote for the angst and anger of this political season.
