Legacy Journal: Walking with Religion---Walking with Nature
Section:
None
Summary:
By my light’s Americans are tolerant about religion and like to get up close to the wonders of the Natural World.
There are to recent examples that illustrate the point. First is the from a study commissioned by the Pew Charitable Trust part of the $ 300 billion dollar a year American philanthropy community. Second is Rochester, NY’s Maplewood area along the lower Genessee River Trail
Main:
* The finding the Pews Study of Religion in America includes the fact that Americans tend to be believers, and that they are tolerance of the idea of that there is more than way to practice a religious life.
** A recent glorious morning among fellow bikers, hikers, stroolers, and exercisers was spent by a group of senior Oscher Life Long Learning Institute at RIT class members who were led by Hal Schuler. The area is the Center of Catholic Rochester on the bluffs above the gorge of the lower Genesee that for 10,000 years has been exposing a stratified geologic history of more than 400,000,000 years before ending it winding way to Lake Ontario.
What is striking is the juxtaposition of nature and the revolutionary power of technology to change the both the landscape and the human environment and culture.
Yankee enterprise was at work in land deals, shipping by sail, steam and modern barge, building bridges and the Erie Canal, dams, water systems, hydroelectric generating plants, and global companies like Eastman Kodak.

Legacy Journal: Summit Dr. Flowers of Spring
Section:
Personals
Summary:
Tessa Little of Summit Dr. Brighton, NY is now a four year old perennial flower who is blooming with the best as recorded here by big sister Emma.
Main:
* The season is Spring.
* The occasion is Memorial Week End in western upstate NY.
* Tessa’s profile includes Tag along as in following Emma, riding the addon to her Mom’s bike, and helping her Dad with yard work. She likes to torment Leo the cat, eat yogurt and sweet treats, open packages, and listen to stories read from her growing library collection of books. Her roaming domain includes her shared upstairs bedroom and playroom, the family areas on the main floor , and the basement including the tool storage area. Outside, she is a motion machine drawn to swings suspended from the high branches of the deciduous trees and private spaces shaped by the lower branches of the evergreens.
* Tessa is likes to do hands on activities. She is curious about which bottons to push and thus make handy things like TV remotes, digital cameras, and cell phones magically work.

Legacy Journal: Memory Lane: Kodak Moments in Carmel at Mission Ranch
Section:
Personals
Summary:
Main:
The fall of 2007 offered an opportunity for the Rochester branch of the family to gather back in northern California with old and new friends, scattered members of the tribe, members of the San Jose Welch family, and son Damon’s buddies from the Empire State, “The City”, and Santa Rosa in Sonoma County for some golf, and --- oh yes, a wedding.
For the Fisks, it was the first formal family wedding in more than thirty-five years.
It was kind of a return to the 1820-1850 Mexican Californio era. The Mission of Junipera Serra was a short hike up the Valley of the Carmel River. Down river, a protected wetland seeped into the Pacific Ocean at a sandy cove just to the west of the fenced Ranch grounds where sheep grazed.
We bunked out in the restored and plumbed ranch out building. Chuck wagon grub and Strong coffee brewed by the grandsons of former vaqueros was available at the cook house at the first light. Horses were stabled on rancheros next to the golf course in Carmel Valley.
The local sights included cypress rimmed pristine beaches and cliffs festooned with native plants and touring plein aire artists. The marine marshes were protected and populated with birds, bugs and aquatic species that could warm the heart of Rachel Carson. Tide pools worthy of attention from Steinbeck and “Doc” Rickets, and shops to tempt the most reticent credit card holder complimented the scene.
A quick drive away was Monterrey, Cannery Row, calamari cuisine, and the historic presidio.
But, the weekend belonged to Rebecca Welch and son Damon.
One of their special guest was 94 year old Grandma Ruth Lear from Oregon who made the gathering a true four generation family event. She jetted in from Corvallis for the Friday evening Groom’s Dinner. The next day it was time for one on one conversation with al the kids, before the sunny early afternoon outdoor wedding, the reception, the wedding dinner, and the following fandango. She did not miss a beat or a photo op.
At 2230 it was time for the younger generation to load into the bus and head out for the Boar’s Breath, a cool basement jazz piano bar in the center of town
The following day it was a burrito BBQ on the beach, a bracing dip in the surf, and final farewell hugs all around.
Here, Ruth is escorted to the beach by two of her eight grandchildren, Damon Fisk from San Francisco, and Jordan Liebbrandt from Portland. She peacefully died recently in the quiet company of family. Her obituary is in the Memorial Week End edition of the Corvallis Gazette.
At the end of the weekend, the bride and groom slipped away to catch a flight to find some rest and privacy in the warm azure blue and bright white of the Aegean Sea, the Greek Isles, and Crete..

Legacy Journal: Year End Clear Winners.
Section:
Almanac
Summary:
* In Random Order, here is a personal Thank Your list of 2007 winners.
Main:
: David Brooks, Op-Ed Columnist for the nytimes. Best Advice: “Interview three people every day.” Solid writing, grounded, funny, and smart. A pleasure to read and watch as a regular panelist participant on the Friday edition of the PBS Lehrer News Hour and even ABC News on Sunday mornings..
: The August 7th picture perfect Carmel, CA wedding of Damon Fisk and Rebecca Welch at the Mission Ranch. Great timing. Good going. An outstanding all family happening. Thanks for the memory treasure chest photo album.
: The summer relocation of the California Littles to The City of Rochester,NY and the town of Brighton. Jon, Erika, Emma and Tessa have been the perfect host and hostesses for a parade of visitors from across the U.S. MCC and URMC have also benefited from their work. Christmas in western upstate New York has been part of a special holiday season.
: A cross country road trip thru the Heartland of the Country was a 2007 highlight. the Ruby Mountains of NE Nevada, the upper Salmon River of Idaho, the Grande Teton and Yellowstone NPs of Wyoming, Paradise Valley and Cisco in Montana, the Bad Lands Lakota Buffalo Grass Lands country out of Rapid City, Sturgis, and Wells South Dakota, Egan, MN Park and Skating Rink, the Minnesota-Wisconsin Interstate Park along the St. Croix River Dalles , the DePaul University district of Chicago and Niagara Falls were all new territory for this traveler.
More than three “locals” were interviewed a each stop. Their stories added rich context to the experience. I thank them all from the local journalist, historian, and fellow hospital breakfast clubber in St Croix, Wisconsin along the National Ice Age Trail to the weather aged and well preserved ranch woman, Mrs Cuny at the end of dusty road in one the most remote table islands in of the Bad Lands Lakata Sioux Reservation of Pine Ridge, the former home of Chief Red Cloud and U.S.M.C.Olympian, Billy Mills.
: Thanks to the great community of Davis, CA , the Davis Senior Center Staff, DAM swimming club, and UCDavis for first rate programs that support senior fitness. The Aggies MBB vs UCLA at Pauley/Wooden Arena this weekend. You must be kidding.
: Thanks to the Raleigh Bike Company of England and the UCDavis Aggie Bike Barn for my restored machine. It is fast, light, safe, comfortable, fun and even tracks well in the new snow. It is also fuel efficient and relatively nonpolluting. BTW, wow many of 15,000 in the Climate Brigade who jetted to and from Bali, Indonesia for the recent UN IPCC tribal gathering and pep rally use a bike daily for personal transportation or pleasure?
: Thanks for JCC. It is a welcoming and healthy bit of Brighton and Rochester Jewish life and culture.
: Thanks to George Eastman and the Kodak Company. Rochester institutions and Hollywood are not their only legacies.
: Thanks to Wegman’s. A great place to refuel. Supermarkets will never the same.
: Thanks to all that made holiday music. The Mormon Tabernacle Choir and Orchestra with Sissel on PBS was especially fine.
: Thanks to many friends, family and neighbors along the trail. 2007 has been a memorable ride. BTW, the Internet techies at Sonic, Expression Engine, URMC , JCC, and the Brighton Senior Center continue to impress. Apple, Google, and open source applications continue to Rock and Rule as part of the exclusive PMASS Club .
Finally, one has the sense that the anti-natalist views of the eco Malthusians fear promoters are wearing thin. Prof David Pimental, a bug guy who bio morphed into a global guru at Cornell Ag, the politically active Directors and executives of the Sierra Club, and the carbon climate crowd have tried to temper their message. But, bottom line, it is still old wine, new label. “More people means Disaster” is the staple standard; “Carbon is Poison” is on the label, even the Champagne. So, the sober message for the Holidays if you must drink to enjoy yourself, be responsible and please, do not drive. Brake for Bikers. To have a really Happy 2008, make a baby, but do not mix up the bottles.
Q: What is more dangerous, birthing a baby, performing your own appendectomy, believing that mankind can override Nature and control the enormous forces that drive what we call Climate, serving with the military in Iraq, living in Richmond, California, or driving a vehicle under the influence of drug or alcohol several times a month? Think about it.
BTW, some are still worried because during the summer of 2005 , the Arctic Ocean ice pack was down to a meager 1,500,000 square miles, ten times the area of California. The good new for the concerned is that as of 29 December, 2007, it is really cold and really dark in that Polar region as ice is rapidly being reformed. Because of the polar winter blackout, photos are not available. But, alcohol abuse remains real, reoccurring , and year around problem among the native population.

Legacy Journal: Tueday SF Bay View
Section:
Environment
Summary:
When San Francisco and the Bay Area is the news source, the story has legs. Mark “ 49er"Twain and his legacy of media writers and reporters, including Tom “Summer of Love “Brokow, learned that lesson well early in their careers
Today the story of the moment involves the leak of more than 58,000 gallons of bunker fuel from an piloted, outbound from Oakland, Hong Kong owned container ship into the center of San Francisco Bay. Volunteers, scores of locally based environmental activist groups, the local congressional delegation, the local city and multi county politicians, state agencies, and federal official have swarmed to the scene. Oh, the guys on the water, the U.S. Coast Guard are being heavily criticized for their failure to contain the spill to the shores and beaches of politically sensitive areas like Marin, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, Contra Costa, Solano, and even Sonoma counties. Rep CA, (D) Chm. George Miller is the public face of outrage. Hearing will be held. Possible criminal charges are being considered pending investigation. Banning bunker fuel is advocated by some.
Main:
The Commandant of the U.S. Coast Guard, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, and the Major of San Francisco and the editorial board of the Chronicle have all been briefed and issued statements. We are awaiting the news that public school students are being given release time to volunteer in the bird rescue mop up operations long the Marina Green. Lunch will be catered by Green’s Restaurant. Pre-spill seaweed salad will be featured
* Meanwhile, from just down the 280 freeway, in the heart of high tech venture capital, is today’s news that Al Gore is a new partner in Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers.
* Further south, Google plans to release an Open Source Java based developers development platform. Ten million dollars is prize money is being offered to application contestants. Further, the second of the the two Google founders has announced wedding plans. Google advisor, Al Gore will not be attending. He has a prior engagement at a December event in Oslo, Norway. Burr, but ice free is the weather forecast.
* Murdoch, NewsCorp and the wsj.com have indicated their intention who make the website content available at no charge. This is further validation of the online search ad model that is replacing some subscription models in the large circulation print media with a global reader profile.
* Recently, Bay Area football teams, like the San Francisco 49ers, the Oakland Raiders, the Cal Bears and the Stanford Cardinal, appear to falling to better teams. Some folks in Marin County are convinced it must be due to living and training in a polluted environment caused by the Chevron refinery in Richmond. Just checkout the stats on breast cancer in Mill Valley, Alzheimer’s in Tiburon, and violent behavior deaths among young men in Richmond.
