Legacy Journal: Sunday Chatter x 3: ABC, NBC, and CBS

Summary:
The silly summer season of Sunday network election talk TV is again upon us. Today, the Governor of California, Arnold Schwarzenegger was front and center for the first one third of ABC’s This Week with George Stephenopoulos. What ever the California connection to Disney, natives would agree with Arnold that California is the most important state in the union, and McCain should not dismiss the state as a lost cause in his general election campaign. This week McCain will address both LA Raza group in San Diego and the annual NCAA meeting. How quixotic is that? Or is good politics now that Steve Smith is now driving the McCain Express bus and serious funds are starting to fuel the political machine.

Main:
Meanwhile George and his wife, Alexandra Wentworth, can spend serious time hanging out with their friends, like the Steinfelds and playing with the kids and the crabs at the Hampton beaches while others summer on ranches in Montana, music festivals in Aspen or Vail, attending media conferences in Sun Valley, Idaho or fly fishing in Jackson Hole Wyoming. Arnold and wife are on Senior Senator watch and have the Gulf Stream on standby near their Santa Monica home. Little of significance will be happening in Sacramento or Washington, DC between now and Labor Day.

As of today, Arnold’s sense of political realism is that:

* The Governator is on top of the early, numerous, and wide spread lightning cause fires in his state. Regional and Federal help has been sufficient to date and the weather is cooperating.

* There will be not drilling for oil off the coast of California. Off shore oil is a states rights issue.

* Global Climate Change is a reality in the minds of California voters, so why should the Terminator stand in front the Green train that has already left the station?

* Political gold is still to be mined in California.

* At the age of 61 year this month, he has a stake in and appetite for future National Service that does not necessarily include national elective office.

* Learning for experience an changing one’s mind is not flip-flopping, it is what smart people, successful business executives and long term survivors do everyday.

* Arnold may have come the United States knowing little English, but puts many crossover journalists, including Time editors, to shame when it comes to putting ideas and opinions into understandable sentences.

Legacy Journal: Number Two as Winners: The Rest of the Story.

Summary:
We all like to see underdogs win. Avis vs Hertz. The latest example is an impressive performance by the LSU Tigers of Baton Rouge, LA in the BCS Championship win over number one ranked Ohio State University. One unsung hero of the win is first year LSU Offensive Coordinator, 50 year old, father of seven, Gary Crowton from the state of Utah. He was calling plays for the SuperDome sky box and was seldom seen on the TV screen. Mavericks make headlines. Good Mormons quietly do their jobs. That is all you need to know except that he enjoys biking with his family.

Main:
Crowton has lived, played and coached around the country. Orem, Provo, Snow JC, Idaho State, BYU, Oregon, Lousiana Tech, Chicago, Georgia, Boston College, Western Illinois, Colarado State. He is a student of BYU Coach, Dr. LaVell Edwards , the “spread offense”, and he is part of a quarterback tradition that includes former Forty Niner Steve Young and Kellen Clemens, currently with the NY Jets.

He is but one example among many of quiet, competent, and capable team players making a difference over time. Some times that difference is on Mission, sometimes in the class room or on the field, sometimes at home, at church or in the community. Dr. Edwards and his wife did a Mission in NYC after he retired from coaching in 2000 after eighteen years at BYU. Gary Crowton was his replacement.

Meanwhile in New Hampshire, the nytimes video reporters visits the bars and discovers the natives heat their homes with $3 a gallon fuel oil and use wood burning stores. The same voters have yet to hear of an energy plan from the candidates. Perhaps the recent warm weather has influenced the messages and the turnout.

Revkin of GoEarth blog at the nytimes is still hot on melting ice in Greenland. In January yet? So, who has the most compelling worry? BTW, the really good news weather story today is that a a lost snowmobile family was found in the snow blizzard National Forest areas out of Durango, CO. The predicted summer water shortage crisis predicted by earlier Revkin sources for the southern Rockies region seems to be rapidly fading.

Legacy Journal: Mormonism, Coal, and New Hampshire Polls

Summary:
“We live in the midst of alarms; anxiety beclouds the future; we expect some new disaster with each newspaper we read.” ---- Abe Lincoln.

Mitt Romney is drawing media attention in New Hampshire. One New Hampshire newspaper editorial has labelled him a phoney, a nytimes reporter, Noah Feldman, is compelled to ask provocative questions and then call attention to Mormon polygamy and the “ idiocycracy” of clean living by avoiding tobacco, caffeine and alcohol. Does he also consider the lack of gambling and lotteries in Utah (and Hawai) as troublesome as the Judaic kosher food tradition? In addition, Romney is also enviromental “inconvenient”. He calls for a national energy stategy that includes liquid coal, increasing the supply of heating oil by building refinery capacity, and investing in nuclear energy. The voters of New Hampshire are concerned about the winter price and availability of fuel oil, and the future costs of electricity.

Main:
The good news is that the media, including the press, is much more restrained than in the political days of Lincoln and cartoonist Thomas Nast. Journalism is also sophisticated, subtile, and scientific in the arts of advertising, influencing, and choice making

* For example, GMA today reported from New Hampshire on a mind mapping “truth” gizmo that records a graphic image of emotional responses to messages and images of events, products, and people. Is this the new brave world of political “science”?

One of the world’s most costly construction project will be done by a Canadian firm. It is a gas pipeline from the north to the hub in Calgary, Alberta.

* Meanwhile, fear mongering, narrow mindedness and group think is alive and well in the free, but not cheap, mass media.
