    The Weekly View from the Davis Farmer’s Market.

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

    As the Valley summer is heating up for the harvest, attention is beginning to turn to the Olympics,football, politics and the pending school year.

    Main:

    The views, reviews and previews from the Heartland:

    * The water related sportspersons in Athens were terrific. Pundit pessimism and predictions of chaos were off the mark. The Olympic Games in of 2008 in Bejing will demonstrate to the world, the growing global power of China and her vast human resources.

    * UCDavis football opens next week at home against North Dakato State.

    * The Yolo county tomato harvest has been bountiful and UCD continue to be the #1 school in the country as measured by Ag reseach funding. It is a major player in Biological Science funding and this year, replaced MIT for # 17 in overall research funding.  The small, but vocal anti Geneticically Modified Organism/Food group appears to have no answers to the success of the “Green Revolution” in blunting the waves of post WW 11 famine in the Third World and of the role of agricultural production, yields and surplus above the subsistence level to promote human health and economic independence for millions, including women.  That ability to enter the cash economy has enabled many to move from peasant status to professional status in less than three generations.

    *  As for politics, it is business as usual.  The Republicans fake right and go left. The Democrats to the opposite. Even NPR, the pundits and the Media have underreported the meaninglessness of the National Parties, the Conventions and the election finance reform loopholes.  It is organizational grunt work get out the vote” success at the precinct grass roots level that will decide the electorate vote outcome.  Veterans vote. Students do not.  We do not expect to see few Presidential candidates or ,their surrogates, on campus this fall.

    *  At UCDavis, this is the year of Biotechnology: NutriGenomics is conferencing, Ag Law is starting at King, the Division of Biological Sciences will become a College under the leadership of Dean Wise, the Genomic Center will open, and the UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento will continue to do collaborative work in the basic science labs on the Davis campus.

    The John Kerry Lt jg: The Search and Destroy Mission

    Section:

    Politics

    Summary:

    On the Sunday talk shows, spokespersons for Senator Kerrywere on the air to defendthe aspiring Commander in Chief from recent allegations regarding the veracity of their candidate’s Viet Nam war record.  At the recent Democratic Convention in Boston, Kerry’s Swift Boat shipmates told one story. Fellow Naval Officers in the Swiftboat Service have been telling their version for more than 30 +years.

    Main:

    John Podesta, Gene Sperling and Paul Krugman had their interpretations of the interpretations on the ABC network Sunday morning news.  In the game of political hard ball and hard facts, they seemed to be playing defense.

    * The story is unlikely to go away soon.

    * Kerry’s full public record a warrior and as an anti Viet Nam War activist will be revisited.

    * The role of his Tort Lawyer vice presidential pick ,John Edwards, in his defense is uncertain.

    * The campaign workers in the field have been informed that overnight polls in Ohio, and other swing states, have turned bearish on the news.

    * The party faithfull in the Davis heartland are very worried.  Buttons are not selling well at the Farmer’s Market and there are few Kerry supporters at the Yolo County or the California State Fairs.

    Meanwhile, the UCDavis Aggie Banda is tuning up for a rockum sockum football season.

    Friday Wrap

    Section:

    WebWise Review

    Summary:

    Pardon our mess, but this site is in the middle of a remodelling job.

    * The Olympics
    * The News
    * The View from the Heartland

    Main:

    * The Olympics:

      Kudos to NBC, The coverage, the calls, the pictures have been nothing short of sensational.  Leave it to the swimmers and the gymnists to show the class of great young athletes showcasing their talents without cheating.

    * The News:

      By what standards is the 4month long John Kerry Viet Nam tour of duty with the search and destroy Swift Boat group to be judged?  The Purple Heart, Max Cleland standard perhaps?

    * The View from the Heartland:  A Higher Standard.

      Take it from one who knows.  The view life is clearer and sweeter from the swimming pool with daughter Erika and granddaugthers Emma and Tessa than was the case when a 25 year old Company Commander from Georgia with 1st Air Cavalry Horse Head patch on his uniform entered a Medical Clearing Company facility near a helicopter landing zone.  He was fully conscious and an instant triple amputee from a friendly granade accident.  His hopes for a political career in his home state were passing before his eyes.  That soldier honors the history of the Purple Heart for which he was not entitled by law and tradition.  That is a high standard.  The Max Cleland standard.
