The Harvest at Halloween:  The Beat in the Davis Farmer’s Market

    Section:

    News: Local

    Summary:

    “Mucho Trabajar = Mucho Dinero”

“We all want, need and deserve univeral access to protections of a well ordered social and economic justice system in this country.”

    * The day dawned in Davis today to the strains of music by Pink Martini of Portand, Oregon on NPR. What fun. Classy, Romantic music one can samba, swing or hum to by China Forbes and company.  Now on PBS had two nice one on one’s with Joe Trippi and Richard Viguarie representing the new Left and the old Right.

    * Next it was up and out for the feel of the water during the swimming workout at Civic pool with DAM and Stu Kahn featuring music geared to a fast pace.

    * Then, it was off to the Farmer’s Market kitty corner across 5th St (the Olde Lincoln HiWay 40 to the East Coast and Pony Express Route to San Francisco.  The Davis High Key Club was doing a brisk pie by the slice fund raiser for the Market.  The Key Club targets world health projects for UNICEF like dietary iodine supplementation via salt to prevent thyroid disease.  Their message of optimism was even better than the taste of their fresh blackeberry pie.

    * Next was a visit to the annual farm to classroom display.  The idea is to connect fresh products from the garden or market to a mobile kitchen to the school lunch menu.  Now there is an idea.  Remove all the vending machines from public schools and put salads on the plates as part of a comprehensive plan to reduce childhood obesity.

    *  Then is was on to the Tamale stand were the usually Mexican-American group from Woodland was doing its fast paced, cash based market business.  One can only image the number of kids that kind of enterprise is helping to put through college. The answer is Mucho, my friend.

    * And they there were the self serving fund raising folks from MOB and something called the Coalition of Legal Professionals.

Votes for Kerry/Edwards?  Bush/Chaney?  Stay tuned for the details from the Heartland in the race to the tape!  Meanwhile, take a walk, play with the kids, tend your pets or plants, clean the garage, sing a song, write a letter, help a friend, an animal or support a worthy cause.  Done daily, small acts of kindness yield large treasures.

Two Americas? The Great Divide: a description with a blueprint for reform advocacy.

    Section:

    Politics

    Summary:

    Premise: Vote your True Colors

    Great Divide:

Hot Red Retro and Cool Blue Metro

is the black and white, binary view of the PPE American landscape during the partisan phase of the election cycle circa 2004.  It is a impressive combinationwebsite, online PDF test files produced with InDesign CS, and a hardcover $40.00 print version with CD.  The father of the project is Phoenix University founder, the aging billionarire and iconoclastic entrepreneur, Dr. John Sperling.

    Main:

The thesis of the project is clear: Radical Political Change is Necessary beginning with regime change at the ballot box this fall and followed by a phalanx of thrusts aimed at radical legistlative and judical reforms at the federal level.  Included in the plan are nothing less than a toika of makeovers:

redistibution of national personal and regional incomes and resources.

    reconstruction of the constitution

    * redefining the national character and ethos

In the words of unidentified project opinion molders and Dr. Sperling, the goal is to provide a

    blueprint

for reconstructing the country. For the 83 year old, Cambridge educated, San Jose launched economist, Arizona resident and investor in biotechnology with a Fountain of Youth promise, time is ticking.

In summary, the project is impressive in how it uses the most disruptive medium in the world today—-the Internet to promote an agenda that is nonpartisan only in the most deconstructed sense of the term.

Henry L Stimson: The Colonel from East to West

    Section:

    Opinion

    Summary:

Simpson died October 20, 1950 after a life of service to his country in times of War and times of Peace.  His foot print is large in matter that are at once global and strategic, but also personal and moral.  He is a key figure in understanding the centrality of the U.S in the key foreign issues of the day:  American Military Power and the control of nuclear weapons, American Economic Power and the role of technology, and Western Cultural Power and the backlash of threatened cultural institutions including militant Islam fundamentalist.

    Main:

    image

Henry L. Stimson is significant today because:

    * He had a global vision and experience that ranged from Europe to Asia, from Manchuria to Central America, for Wall Street to California water sheds, from horseback to the dawn of jet planes and space exploration.  Above all, he was one of a small group that knew the details, the funding,  the people, and the scope of the U.S. Nuclear Development Project during WW II.

    * He knew when, where and why to give quiet, nonpublic advice, counsel to trusted leadership.  Trust, a well educated brain trust, public service as duty rather than a career, and a culture of secrecy were part of the ethos of the time.

    * He fostered the careers of young men into positions of national policy leadership, Wisemen ,including McGeorge Bundy, John J, McCloy and Felix Frankfurter.

    * He provided continuity in National Policy from TR to Truman.

    * He was neither a dogmatic Sharpie ideologue nor a yellow legal pad pensil eraser argue it round, argue it square attorney who ran with the foxes and hunted with the hounds.

Deconstructionism, Structuralism and Existentialism: Dying, but not yet Dead in Davis

    Section:

    Opinion

    Summary:

“The aspiration toward freedom is the most essentially human of all human manifestations…..”erik hoffer of San Francisco

The extended and nuanced debating style of Presidential Candidate, John Kerry was recently defended by an intelligent Davis lady with a educated and literary frame of reference. She has opined that he was too subtle for the likes of most of us who do not have the smarts or the education necessary to absorbed wisdom from the intellectural ... ism cult heros such as Jacque Derrida, Levi-Strauss and Camus. Derrida has a recent nytimes.com obituary

It there a reasonable answer to explain the clear gulf between the views of the urban cosmo elites and the rest of us unwashed, dirt-under-the-fingernail types that qualify as rude, rural and rustic folk ?  I suggest consulting Eric Hoffer ,among others..

    Main:

Blue Skies  is one thought offered by David Brooks on a certain Presidential Candidate’s use of rhetorial DECONSTRUCTION.

We concur with the idea that the Coalition’s actions around the Globe against those that conductiing a holy war in the name of a religion in is not about a pesky social “nuisance” like organized crime.  Since when did the Mafia promise its recruits Martyrdom in Heaven?

A CONSTRUCTIVE counterpoint is the reality of the West writ large in the views, words, and deeds of her people.

Fredrick Jackson Turner, and others have advanced the thesis that the opening of American West and the migration across the Mississippi River was part an unmatched tale of epic proportions. True, that tale is part of American myth making from Stephen Ambose of Decatur,Illinois to those who first described the wild Pacific shore.

But, there is more. The human exploration, mirtation and settling of the west gave opportuity to independent, self-sufficient and small land owning folk who were part of the Jeffersonian vision of the nation that began in the western Atlantic, spanned the Mississippi River, crossed the Plains, vaulted the Rocky Mountains, trekked the Desert, and followed the rivers to the western Pacific shore.

    * First, one feels sorry for those that live in ghettos, both urban and intellectual.  Maybe some time spent fishing, chopping wood, building a fence , repairing a child’s kite or otherwise making a connection with the wonders of nature would be therapeutic if not transforming.

    * Second, there is no sure cure from pessimism associated with aging.  There is fate in the genes.  Steve Reeves chose his parents well.

    * Third, The United States of America is a big and rich patchwork of places that do not all view the world throught the group think of centers like NYC, Washington, D.C,  Paris, or Geneva.

      By the Way:

One wonders what the chefs at the fine executive kitchens of the UN, UNESCO and WHO are serving their patrons and guests for lunch today.  Yes Alice, there is an obesity epidemic as well as starvation in the Sudan. Some institutions need a regime change and a graft of steel to the backbone.
