You never know what will happen

    Section:

    Essays

    Summary:

An immigrant and new citizen of this country has said, YNKWWH, is the greatest truth and strength of the U.S. He was paying an ultimate compliment to his adopted land.

And so it comes and so it goes.

    Main:

Who knows the future of climate?  We do not even know if or how much it is going to rain in Davis tomorrow.  The sky is clear and blue today. It was squalling to the tune of 1” yesterday.

Will I win the ebay auction for a squash racket?  Can we know the significance of the vote in Iraq?  Should we buy or sell?

Must all questions be answer and all doubts be removed before we act.  Not in the real world most of us live in.

Orient, Observe, Decide, Acti .  That is one strategy what works for fighter pilots, athletes and trauma surgeons.  Time is frequently a critical factor.  You either take your shoot when it is available, or you do not.  And if you are not in the game,  the shot is unavailable..

So, get up, get out and get engaged with life as it is not as one wishes it to be.

Mountaineering Memories:  From the Cascades to Nepal to the Valley of the Sacramento

    Section:

    Columns

    Summary:

The story of Willy Unseold is part of the Fisk/Lear family saga.  For us in beings in Corvallis, Benton County Oregon. It continues into the Cascades, the Ranger Districts of the Northwest National Forests and to the OSU campus of the early ‘60s.  It extends to the Peace Corps, Nepal, the high Sierra and to numerous quests and challenges.

    Main:

Corvallis is typical of small western land-grant university towns; People live there by choice, not chance.  Prior to the caming of a Hewlett Packard facility, it was a one company like of place that has been home to Oregon State University since 1868.  Great grandmother Ruth Lear and GPa Gene were married in the Methodist Church.  She still regularly attends Sunday service there.

As “townies”,  Uncle Jerry Lear and Janet Lear Fisk were OSU undergrads before transferring to Pill Hill in Portland and the University of Oregon Medical School and the UofO Nursing School.  Janet, RN then had a stint with the Peace Corps in Sabah Malasyia on the Island of North Borneo on the slopes of MT. Kinabalu out of Kota Kinabalu.  Her Peace Corps mission was a least partly influenced by the popular Philosophy classes and tales of Willy Unsoeld.  It is no accident that three Fisk/Lear daughters have trekked together on a self-conducted trip to Nepal.  Brother Damon has trekked the South Island in New Zealand and climbed MT Shasta.

So, what is it about climbing Mountains that is appealing?  Ask the UCDavis students who a doing wall climbing in the safety of the ARC and they will tell you.

      * It is a challenge of physical limits.  It is a contest to show courage by overcoming adversity and conquering fear.

      *  It is change to face the forces of nature straight on.

      *  It is an opportunity to do what most can not or will not.

      * It is a chance to enter a exclusive pantheon of heros.

Like Olympians, IronMan Triathletes, and long distance bikers,Mountaineers have their own cultures, tales, heros, ethos, clubs, societies, gatherings, publications and rituals.  Common to all are the Challenge and the Quest.  It is an olde story that is retold in many forms, many tongues and around many campfires.

It is a quiet, foggy holiday in the heartland of the Sacramento Valley.

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

    • The early morning  Arroyo Pool DAM  group was  "off the blocks" and " on the clock"
    1. The campus is starting to come to life with a number of  athletic team working out in the weight room, the rowing machines, on the track and running the parking facility stairs.  The baseball and rowing teams were out at 0800.  Members of Coach Vs Senior Learning Group were on the machines  getting in some aerobic and strength sets. The  bike folks were out and about with ear muffs and mittens.

    Main:

    • The themes of the week has been set, played out and confirmed:

    • The Capitol Corridor Am Track service from Roseville thru Davis to and from the Bay Area is a winner . Ridership is increasing at a double digit rate, the schedule is expanding, and the service is improving.
    • The City of San Francisco begins early and ends late, particularly when the weather is at its Wednesday best.
    • Apple’s stock price tripling in the past year is not fluke.  MacWorld Conference and Expo , book sales and traffic at the Apple retrail store are all positive indicators.
    • Damon Fisk was the perfect host at the Pacific Height’s pad. He appears to have a good match at work with Rothert, Hancock and Bullshoft.  He joined the " on the move and on the go"  iPod generation on the snowy slopes of Tahoe for the long weekend after a Thursday overnight in Davis.
    • Saturday, The Davis Farmer’s Market  hosted Valley Oak 4th graders doing a bake sale to raise funds for Tsunami relief, brain researcher from the UCDavis Medical Center signing up health controls for an MRI based study of lactic ACID metabolism  in patients with recurrent acute panic attaches, and food shoppers like the Little family: Daddy Jon, Mommy Erika, Big Sister Emma, and Little Sister Tessa.
    • The Community Food Program hosted at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church was staffed by a campus Red Cross  group of students and faculty including MS. Bodin of Exercise Biology. The planned community events  around the Martin Luther King themes appear to  generate a modest turnout.
    • BTW, pmachine as announce ver 2.4 of pmachine PRO and and a security and bug update of Expression Engine from 1.2 to 1.2.1.  This site is now updated and hopefully more secure.

If it is January, it is time for MacWorld Exp in the City and the Fog of Blog Flog!

    Section:

    WebWise Review

    Summary:

Today, Steve Jobs did the expected.  He made news and announced a new Mac - the Mini, a headless and mobile entry level box. The flash memory based iPod is called the Shuffle. In addition, quarterly financials for Apple are out tomorrow.  As usual, the stock was up in the week prior to the Expo flogged by the blogs and the rest of the rumor mill.

    Main:

Meanwhile, It is time of prepare for the visit to The Embarcadero, Moscone Center, Pacific Heights,  the Union Square Borders Book Store, Stacey’s Books, perhaps even the pool at the Olympic Club and the Biotechnology gathering at the St. Francis Hotel.

Stay tuned for a report for the floor.

    From the floor:

The iPod Shuffle, the new OSX Tiger, and the min-Mac box on on the floor and are dwawing lines, questions, ohs and awes.  Derrick Story and David Pogue of the—Missing Manual series from OReilly were great as usual.

    Impressive Impressions:

    * Spotlight in Tiger

    * ilife integration

    * Page and Keynote 2.0 integration in iWorks with Flash exporting to the Web with more animation preserved

    * iPod generation at the S.F Apple Store.

    * The smart Apple wizards on the floor for questions and demos.

Speaking of star power, how about Paz Vega in the movie Spanglish?  There is look in the eye, a cat like grace and a curve to the steely spine than could only be born and breed in the of the Bull Rings of Seville and southern Spain.

Brooks is great for but where is the likes of Hemingway when we really need his?

    Taking your best shot

    Summary:

"You miss 100% of the shots you do not take."  -   Über skater, Wayne Gretsky

    True
    ✔
    False
     X

    Main:

Meanwhile, we are taking our shots with :

    1. * Foxfire 1.0
    2. *  An inline HTML text editor for EE 1.2
    3.   *  S5  a CSS based presentation application for Weblogs

The 2005 edition of MacWorld Conference and Expo is expected to register more than 35,000 to sit at the feet of the master, Steve Jobs.
Music is much on the mind of the faithful.  Flash iPods, headless Macs, and digital images and video are hot consumer based items.
However, the OS X system and server are what drives the enterprise and gets the attention of the IT folks.
