    Putting color into spring

    Section:

    Science and Technology

    Summary:

This is the season for the spring butterfly migration of the painted lady (Vanessa cardui)  from the southern desert north to Yolo County and beyond. To nourish them with necter, the thistles, poppys and redbuds filling stations are in full bloom.

    Main: image

When emerging from the cocoon, the young butterfly is equipped with a concentrated energy source in the form of a fat.  Necter supplies quick energy in the form of sugar.  So for those survivors-in-training out there, think of caterpillars, larvae and grubs as one of nature’ own energy sources.  They are said to inhabit all but two continents.

    Memoirs

    Section:

    Advice

    Summary:

“For what human ill does not dawn seem to be an alleviation?”——Thorntom Wilder

Clarity of meaning, purpose and significance sometimes calls for stepping back, standing still and surveying the scene.  As it is with dramatic fiction, so it is with the reality and noise of quotidean life.

From the very civil spring time world of Davis, the view is both respectful and optimistic.

    Main:

One example, is the mood of the community.  Like a chick emerging from its shell, or the baseball team in Spring Practice,  the attitude seem to say, I am Ready.

And Ready is as Ready does and the Community collectively does much that simply works well.  Student Russ Dunning and David Hawkins, PhD are completing the Data Collection portion of their age statified quantification of muscle-tendon function, DAM volunteers are preparing for the annual Berryessa Open water swim and regional SC Championships, the public schools are on Spring Break, UCD students are preparing to start Spring Quarter, the surrounding fields are green and growing. Even the daily drumbeat of global doom, gloom, death and dispair driving some of the public’s Fear Factor quotient into the troposphere seems to be largely ignored.

Yet, people make plans for tomorrow, next week, the fall harvest, the next trip and whatever.  So maybe Wilder, an others, have messages worthy of our revisiting as we consult our collective memoirs.

“My advice to you is not to inquire why or whither, but just enjoy your ice cream while it’s on your plate.”—Thornton Wilder

The Sexes in Davis: Members of the Gender and the Generational Divide gather around the table.

    Section:

    Essays

    Summary:

It is not an Institute organized International Symposium, nor an advocacy sponsors gathering, but the family table continues to provide one of the most powerful learning and information sharing forum around the world.  It is spontaneous, democractic, practical and necessary

The Davis Senior Center has a variety of conversational centers.  For example,  6 people seated around a round lunch table may discuss opera, plantar fascitis, nuclear submarines, the genetics of race, and swimmers shoulder in less than 30 minutes of food and chat.  Further, bingo, bridge and baby blanket knitting, and book groups problem solve daily. Many get their understanding of the world at the hair dresser’s or the neigbhorhood bar.  The meal table, the crafts table, the kitchen counter, and the game table offer much to be preferred.

    Main:

It is a joy to watch a retired male humanities professor and a 20 something female dietician respectfully and intelligently exchange their respective worldview prospectives on current hot topics like the genetics of race and gender.  Professor Cavelli would be impressed.  PP&E candidates need not apply.

The rhetoric of the X vs the y chromosome

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

Today, Maureen Dowd of the nytimes enlisted the might X X chromosome combo in her usual rhetorical war of the sexes column.  True to style, the diminuitive y chromosome is charicatured as the little guy who just does not get it.  More and bigger is defined as genetically better.  In the uban media centers.  Women who can write can indeed complete and win at many levels.  Testosterone and muscle are out; the sharp literary rapier game of wit in in.  Game, Set,  Match.  The Gals take home all the marbles.

    Main:

    But, who is going to:

      * Man the Rescue Helicopters and volunteer to make the plunge into the North Atlantic and North Pacific waters when a ship is taking on water and the crew need a lift to safety?

      * Bake the bread at 0400 AM?

      * Mine the coal, mill the steel,  fall the timber, build the skyscraper and the bridges.

      *  Repair the rigging ?

      * Male role model and coach the next generation of young boys, and yes, daughers, future wives and mothers?

Sometimes, little things ,like a well placed -CH3 group on a steroid ring, can mean much in molecular biology, anatomy,  physiology, normal psychology and the general culture .

And so it goes in the tree lined streets of Davis.  Here, and elsewhere, the birds in the trees were singing their gender defining nest building sweet songs to their mates and the world as they welcomed both the rain and the sun.  Most folks below are going about the business of this Sunday, the first day of spring. They seem pleasntly focused on friends, family, and final exams.  The press worry and care of NYC and Washington, D.C. seems….. somehow…..like…... of little and passing concern.  Please pardon the valley talk.

Exercise, Aging, Fitness and Senior Education in Davis

    Section:

    Advice

    Summary:

Currently, there is an overflow crowd of 425 at Mini_Medical School, an 8 week Saturday morniing lecture series being presented by the Geriatric Group from the University of California Davis School of Medicine.  Today’s topic was aging and exercise.  The bottom line is that seniors need regular exercise, that it can be done at home using simple equipement like elastic bands,  However, the truth is than the intensity,  scope and variety of exercise activities engaged in by seniors is large, growing and in academic centers, largely neglected and unstudied.

    Main:

For example,  the truth is that researchers tend follow funding flows and acute care hospitals are rushing patients to the fast revolving in and out door.  California, is a fast paced drive thru culture.  Get the procedure on the fly.  Heal, recover and rehab at home.

At home , many seniors are frequently:

    *  unobserved or monitored for conditions like deep vein thrombosis.

    * poorly or under nourished and hydrated.

    * non compliant with medication dosing and schedules.

    * prone of falls and other home based accidents.

    * socially isolated.

    * restricted in activities of daily living.

Fit, mobile, active and alert Seniors are more successful patients that are those who are inactive, unfit and overweight.

Staff organized Support Groups and Volunteers at the Davis Senior Center offer exercise classes, home warm meal delivery, club meeting rooms, social events, games, films and recreation, day trips, tax preparation services, veteran counselling, public information lectures, public health testing, social service, legal and medical referrals, and opportunities to interface with the public schools and UCD students going research, class projects, interships and community service,

Bingo: Kristof of the nytimes continues to find his groove

    Section:

    News: National

    Summary:

In doing the early morning Arroyo DAM Wednesday 9 X 100 with Coach Stu Kahn, the gang ” found its groove at about the midway mark.  The lesson was one of finding a pace, holding and bettering a previous average and improving.  That is what Kristoff of the nytimes has been doing well of late.

    Main:

Today, Hillary in the heartland is his topic.  But really, it is a lesson about listening, learning, changing your hehavior, knowing your enviroment and knowing yourself.  Hillary and Kristoff appear to know, reflect and seem to value the voice of the American Heartland, because that is the tap root to which they return for regeneration.  Kerry and Dean seem bred from different stock, as they say back at the ranch.

    * Kristof is thoughful without being dogmatic.

    * He is calm and factual without being dull.

    * He thinks and writes with clarity purpose to good effect.

    * He is not cute nor catty.  Wielding the rapier wit is not his style.

    *  But, even Kristof can get the story wrong.  Demographics trump economics in the analysis of abortion number cycles in the U.S.

Hum,  one might wonder what sport Kristof pursues in the daily requirement of clearing the higher neuronal registers and finding his groove?  Ping pong anyone?
