Just Do It: Triathlon Training Kealakekua Bay Style

    Section:

    Sports

    Summary:

Uncle Phil and Grandpa Bill of Nike fame would be proud of the that the Oregon Fighting Duck spirit is is alive and well, not only in Eugene and San Diego, but also in the Hawaiian Islands and in the Kailua Kona area of the Big Island.  In Kealakekua Bay it is time to surf,  hike the Kaawaloa or Captain Cook Monument Trail to one of the best snorkling spots on the planet, swim with the spinner dolphins and chat with the locals both solid and quirky.
BTW,Kaawaloa is the olde Hawaiian place name.

    Main:

    * The two mile trail drops 1200 feet over via upper soft path through some private farms and a mid portion that is lava based.  These portions are both flanked by high reed grasses.  The lowerer third is lava switch backs and moderately steep. Allow at least 45 minutes for a steady pace without breaks for the trek down.  Double the time for the return with at least a couple of breaks for water, recovery and viewing the coastline.

    * Today sky was sunny and the sea was calm.  The Captain Cook Memorial site and jetty were erected and build as tributes by his countrymen to the ” Great Circumnavigator.’

    * By 0930 the dive boats were in and there was a string of kayakers stretching form their launching site one mile to the south side of the bay.

    * The fish were abundance and varied among the corral, acacia line shore, the lava rock and the cooler fresh water vents.  In fact, a local DPW road crew was capping a spontaneous artesian well leak in the middle of the upper Napoopoo road at the 1300 ft level.

    * Now is time to circle from the pali across open water to take on the surge and the breakers on the rocky ocean side.  So what is the story line?  Go for it means prepare, practice, equip and enjoy the experience of safely setting goals and then challenging yourself with

    RELIANCE, ENDEAVOUR   without being INTREPID.

.  The Nike spirit and that of Captain Cook as as one in the pantheon of the quest to test the limits of performance.

    * An so it goes in the land of the IronMan make real by men like Dave Scott , Peter Reed and thousands of others.

    * Meanwhile, there may be yet another multi sport event in the making—The Hawaiian Pentathlon.  Do we have any sponsors in the house?

    * Oh, the final score of the Pacific Life (Breeching Whale Log) Holiday Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego was the Oklahoma Sooners 17 and the Oregon Ducks 14

    Travel

    Summary:

The north coast of the Big Island is one of the few places where you an view and then visit a snow capped mountain from calm 76 degree ocean waters.

    Main:

    image

    * On the top of Mauna Kea are multiple world class astrological observatories and a permafrost field> . To the south is Mauna Loa and the longest continously recording site for atmospheric CO2  levels, thanks to Charles Keeling, of the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.

    *  In the ocean are breaching, birthing, nursing and breeding Alaskan Humpback whales. Whew, all of that on an empty stomach until reaching the summer North Pacific krill feeding grounds.

    *  Between the two are the Kohala mountains, stark lava flows and the famed Parker cattle ranch in cool , well watered and wealthy Waimea in 3000 ft. Paneola county.

BTW, an Agricultural View of Hawaii is offer on DVD by Americas Heartland series by KVRE and PBS.  The players are the Parker Ranch, the Greenwells of Kona Coffee fame, chocolate from scratch, and Aqualculture. The episode # is 117

Holiday Fantasy at the Davis Farmers Market: War and Diversity

    Section:

    News: Local

    Summary:

The Davis California has been called the “People’s Republic”, the “Athens of Yolo County”,  and the third best place to live between Sacramento and San Francisco.  But, few spots are more wed to the ideals of social activism.  That activism includes promoting local “diversity” and global peace.  This week, a senior environment law firm named partner, Tom Taylor, was sworn into an elected post , Board Member of the Unified Davis School District by Yolo Counter Superior Court Judge, David Rosenber. Taylor, who is black, was the top vote getter.  In addition, the five members of the Davis City Council are currently considering the language and the merits of a recently proposed “Withdrawal from Iraq” resolution.  A post new year vote is pending.

    Main:

    Context:

    *  Most of the candidates for the local school board have been in favor of “diversity”.  According to a story in,

    the Davis Enterprise

, Steve Horowitz of the UDSD Human Resources Department reports that while 64% of the local public school kids are white, 84% of teachers are so classified by the District.
One might wonder if a former DHS superstar running back, who now works as a local play ground superintentent is counted as a “diversity” hire and local resident role model.

    *  Because Davis is largely a one industry reseach university town, has recently rejected a major local planned community referendum on a significant addition to the housing supply and is experiencing a declining primary grade school demographics,  the community has a non-rental housing crush and the prospect of an inadequate local tax base.  The local teacher’s union is concerned about the lose of jobs.  In fact, a recently completed grade school stands empty and largely idle.  Meanwhile, some are suggesting that active teacher recruiting should be extended to traditional black colleges in the south and on the east coast.

    * The Medical School of UCD was the setting of the historic U.S. Supreme Court,

    Bakke

quota decision in 1978.  Racial quotas for purposes of school admission were found to have injustly disadvantaged a full qualified white male applicant.  Similar court decisions have also been extended to quotas in hiring and contracting.

    * Meanwhile, local progressive pacifist groups accuse military recruiters of lying to adult armed forces reelistees about benefits, bonuses, assignments, training and risks.  That was part of the message delivered and left by a recent visitor and grieving mother, Cindy Sheehan.

    * Today, that a certain nytimes dowager has returned from her recent book tour and make over to give her catty biweekly Georgetown Saloon(sic) literary laced state-of-the-world views on the current administration, Texans, Cowboys and real sensitive guys.  Taint pretty folks.

BTW, the Maureen Dowd online reports are now narrated by a professional voice in the form of a Podcast for paid subscribers. The bad news is that John Tierney is on vacation.

Whales, Dolphins,Pandas and now Polar Bears: Hotspot icons

    Section:

    News: International

    Summary:

People in Davis have passions for plants, animals and the environment.  Some are unsure, even suspect, of the human species past, present and future.  A few even admit to watching non PBS TV and listening to non NPR radio.

    Main:

The heartland was treated to a big media Christmas retread by Bob Woodward on the Thursday. ABC Tonight Newscast in a Bill Blackmore feature

about “Drowning Polar Bears” north of the Arctic Circle.  The reported proximate cause of the pending species catastrophy is a lack of float ice. The ultimate cause is—- yes, you are right once again—- man created GLOBAL WARMING.  Colorful, well lighted “recent” footage supplied by GreenPeace, a variety of Wildlife and Enviromental advocacy groups illustrated the piece.

Now, the website report is not representative of what was on the Nightly News version.  The first hasmuch more context and detail. The second was an appeal to the gut and the soft underbelly of the audience.  You want information? It is once again Game, Set and Match for the Web.  Faster, Better and Cheaper is the standard.  If the good guys do not use it, the bad guys will prevail. Here we are not talking about the Illicit and the Amoral crowd.  We are talking about the quality and quantity of fact based information without obfuscation and intrusion by the advertising and advocacy folks.

But now we get it.  Broadcast News has lost its way and is rapidily losing its loyal and aging viewership.  Pharmaceuticals are all over the ad space.  The new generation of news hound wants cheap, reliable and up-to-the-minute current content.  Show me the beef; we want the reality stuff; we have seen the March of the Penguins and now we want to see the drowning bears.

Come to think about it, the Arctic North is cold and dark this time of year, according to

    NOAA

and there are few journalist out and about those environs.  But, most Davis middle school science students already about stuff like the December 21 Winter Solstice.

BTW, who is the ABC umbrella wrap around these days? And some are only sceptical about planted stories from the U.S. government!
