    California continues to be the long-term national trend setter.  The governor has gone green and champions a health insurance mandate. The state legislature is poised to join stampede to the head of the line in the primary races.  The senior Democratic congressional delegation has high profile Committee Chairmen.  Meanwhile, candidates for national office are canvassing the state for issues, endorsements, celebrities, talent and money.

    * Colleges and Universities continue building their California alumni bases by recruiting students, athletes and faculty members.

    * Ethanol fuel entrepreneurs have driven up the futures price of corn to $4.50 bl and poor Mexicans complain about the recent hike in the price of tortilla flower south of the border.  Colorado beef, Iowa hogs and Arkansas chicken will soon follow. Local eggs and diary are up in local markets.

    * The national conventions are scheduled for Denver and Minneapolis.

    * Celebrities continue to want to own a piece of Montana, travel to Vail for the snow, and hang out in San Diego for the golf, sailing, sun and surf.

    * Retirement favorites favor the southwest and the west coast.

    * Asian markets, trade and transportation routes favor the west coast.

    * Public lands and resources, including the National Parks, National Forests and BLM, are readily accessible.

    * Personal and work life styles are relaxed, informal and largely non urban.

    * Work and personal investment opportunities continue to expand faster than the national averages.

    * Legacy cultures are diverse and non dominating.

    Meanwhile, at the Davis Senior Center the Armchair Travellers and the Genealogy Club were inspired by Rick Power and Elizabeth Campbell.  Their quest for roots, meaning and beauty in the antiquity, the country-side and the people of Guatamala, Egypt, Jordan and Black Mountain, NC had folks ready to dust off the passport, grab the camera and network with long lost relatives.

    Summary:

    Friday in Davis is a blast in January.

    * The cold north wind is bracing by Sacramento Valley standards and is a challenge to the Davis community and UCDavis students bikers. The chill factor is in and area citrus is potentially effected.  DAM swimmers sprint to the 80 degree outside pool water from the unheated dressing rooms where muffs are traded for Speedos, googles and caps.

    * The Genomics Center is hosting speakers from the east,including the NIH.  Integration of Environmental and Genomic research is the current $200 million prize that is on the table.

    *  Meanwhile, clubs at the DSC are currently orienting themselves to the new year, new programs and new volunteer programs.

    Meanwhile, we note that oldest daughter, Erika Little of Davis, is listed as a coauthor of a poster and paper on BioMedical Engineering research from the lab of Kathy Ferrara. Combining liposomes, microbubbles and ultrasound for a possible targeted drug delivery system is the topic.

    Sports Do Not Build Character…They Reveal It

    Alums quarterback Joey Harrington and Nike founder Phil Knight attended the MacArthur Court Saturday morning sellout that featured the #1 ranked and unbeaten UCLA Bruins and the #16 Oregon Ducks.  The Ducks led by 10 at the half and were without standout forward Makik Hairston.  The game was telecast by Foxsports.

    Oregon coach, Ernie Kent was a member of the 1974 team that similar win over a number one ranked UCLA team.

    Meanwhile, the Pac 10 men’s basketball season is off to a well balanced and highly competitive start.


    * Meanwhile, the latimes reports today that Senator Barbara Boxer of Marin Country and Brooklyn, New York has with down an “award”  granted by her office to a rapidly growing Islamic group with an office in Sacramento.  She has called the award a “mistake” when possible group ties to overseas politically active Muslim groups came to her attention. 

    Boxer is the new chairperson of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee.  She has been outspoken in her criticism of the Bush Administration because of possible security threats to seaports.
