Legacy Journal: Basketball and Brain Behavior
Section:
Sports
Summary:
Individual and team sports require repetition so that action and behavior does not require conscious decision analysis— the neuromuscular memory response is fast, automatic and correct. The psychology is straight-forward and well known. Sensory input data are massive and unconscious shortcuts necessary while sifting and conscious cortical analysis are slow and frequently inappropriate. Flight or Fight vs Dead.
Main:
That is the essence of the David Brooks column in the Sunday nytimes.com. Baseball, spring training and learning to catch a ball are his brainy sports metaphors.
And so it goes in fast-paced tournament basketball and many of the activities of daily living. Just try designing and building a mechanical model of Bobby Bonds, Aaron Brooks or Emma Little.
* On St. Patrick’s Day, many in Davis automatically wore green, participated in community events, school Walk-a-thons, soccer tournaments, beer at the Grad, corned beef at Zia’s Deli, and yellow and green Oregon Duck NCAA basketball at its best. Those upstart #3 Ducks with a solid defense and rapid-fire offense deflated the pundits and easily put away the media Cinderella team from Winthrop. * Meanwhile, five and half year old Emma Little was proudly leading a parade of Patwin school mates, parents and grandparents around a one km. Arroyo Park course six times. She was on automatic in the quest for Pops rewards and scores. * And so it goes. Practice pays dividends. Repetitions , Conditioning and Mental Toughness count. The game is not played in the press. Scores and winning the close contests are truth-tellers. Polls and Hollywood movies are not. * So, with the first day of spring and lengthening of the days in Davis there was a local discussion on depression in the over 65 group. The conclusions included the following:
# Attitude is largely a matter of individual personal responsibility. # Appropriate exercise, adequate nutrition, reasonable expectations, positive social networks, and screening for common medical conditions like Vitamin B6 deficiencies and hypothyroidism can significantly lower the incidence of depression. # Fun, Laughter, Hope for the Future and Enjoyment of the Moment seem to be common elements is good mental health. # The recent winner of the annual one and a half million dollar Templeton Prize is a Canadian born Rhodes Scholar, McGill University philosopher and polymath, 75 year old, Charles Taylor, who views Spirituality as giving a cultural flavored meaning, purpose and an emotional lift to individuals and groups. The award was announced at the Church Center of the United Nations in New York and will be official presented in May at a ceremony in Buckingham Palace.

Legacy Journal: Sports and Young Talent
Section:
Sports
Summary:
Sport is one of the showcases for young talent. It is frequently the fast track for moving up and out. The stories are legion.
Main:
Consider 44 year old Craig Robinson, the first year Head MBB Coach at Brown University. The former Captain and All Ivy League at Princeton, where he played for Pete Carill, and earned his B.A,.He is a native of Chicago, a University of Chicago MBA, a Morgan Stanley banker and six year assistant MBB coach at Northwestern.
He is also the brother-in-law to Presidential Candidate. D. Ill Senator, Barak Obama. Robinson’s sister, Michelle is a senior counsel for the University of Chicago Medical Health System.
There are those who view high school , club and university sports as a waste of time at best and a system of racial exploitation at worse.
As in the game of life, balance is the key.
* Consider the prodigious talent, achievements, and character of golfer, Tiger Woods. An economics major, he is said to have a form of dyslexia. His game and life speak for themselves.
* Calvin Hill, the father of Duke graduate, Grant Hill, was an All Ivy League running back at Yale where he was a member of an integrated fraternity. His ten year NFL career with the Dallas Cowboys also included a marriage to a Wellesley graduate and former room-mate to Hillary Rodham-Clinton.
* The current University of Oregon Head MBB coach is Ernie Kent of Gary Indiana, former assistant at Stanford and father of Duck three sport letterman and outstanding Uof O student, Jordan Kent.

Legacy Journal: Ducks Strut their stuff at Staples
Section:
Sports
Summary:
Bryan Taylor: One Dandy Duck
Main:
The Oregon Ducks won the Pac-10 Tournament by dousing USC at the Staples complex before a crowd of 18,000. It was over early and was 78- 39 at 6:51 went Ernie Kent pulled the starters including the elegant explosive 6’ 5” Jr., Bryan Taylor of nearby Encino and Harvard Westwood. Taylor was also the perfect tournament, MVP.
How do you define perfection? Let us count the ways:
* 32 points. 11/11 from the field, 7/7 from 3 point range, 3/3 from the freethrow line.
* Hold the leading USC scorer, Nick Young, to 10 points without one PF.
* Make friends and influence people with a style that shines with the polish of character, cool and class.
The NCAA seeding official must have been impressed. Today, Oregon was seeded #3 in the Mid-West. They will be mixing it up at the Mid West Regionals in St. Louis after taking on # 14, Miami of Ohio and # 6 Notre Dame in Spokane.
