Legacy Journal:Fire in the Sierra Tahoe region

    Section:

    Environment

    Summary:

The eyes of Davis are on the mid Sierra and the fire that burned five square miles of land on a ridge between the town of South Lake Tahoe, Highway 50, Fallen Leaf Lake and Lower Echo Lake.

    Main:

    * Davis folks to not fight the summer heat; they desert the Valley for the Ocean or the Sierra.

    *  Valley folks love to gamble and see the shows in eastern South Tahoe on the Nevada side of the stateline.

    * More than one UCD professor has lunched out during their long careers as Tahoe water clarity experts.

    * Wilderness folks love Desolation.

    * Family campers have fond summer memories of nearby Camp Berkeley and Camp Sacramento.

    * Boat captains are concern about a fall of morning fishermen of mackinaw trout, tours to Emerald Bay, and dinner cruises at sunset.

    * And then there is the upscale Sanford retreat and conference center at the Tallac end of Fallen Leaf Lake.

    * Some of us also wonder who is going to pay the fire’s carbon tax.

Meanwhile, the young persons paperback edition of Al Gores Truth guide to the environment is at a store near you.  Professor Gore continues to believe that the half century of Roger Revelle, Charles Keeling Mauna Loa CO

2 atmospheric data that he was “exposed to” as a 1968 Harvard undergraduate, is the root cause of surging of global natural disasters brought on by global human overpopulation and energy consumption.  The inconvenient fact is the rise in this essential gas has been .0005%  in 50 years in

    absolute terms

. The increase has been from 320 ppm to 370 ppm.

Gore, and his team of experts, conveniently edit out the fact that water vapor is the most significant gas in the atmosphere helping to maintain an estimate average global surface temperature of 58 degrees.

    Gore does not credit

    Population Bomb

,a 1968 best seller, Paul Ehrlich of Stanford, or his wife Anne of the Sierra Club with informing his global prophecies.  However, and to his credit,  he did read Rachael Carson when he was fourteen.

BTW: The American Bald Eagle, with many a nesting pair in Washington, Minnesota and Florida, is now off the endangered/threatened species list.

Legacy Journal: Positive Points ref Erika Little

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

The positive points of family pride: Erika Little.

    Main:

    Positives:

First, let it be known that this writer has a genetic built-In bias when it come to kids and grandkids. Erika “Kika” Little has character qualities by the dozens:

    * As a person she has complete integrity and modesty. She interests have a wide scope.

    * Her range of friendships is broad and deep.

    * As a daughter she has an appreciation of her heritage.

    * As a wife she is proud and supportive of her spouse.

    * As a mother she is totally engaged in the safety, development ,training, education of her two daughters.

    * As an employee she is competent, timely, cooperative and productive. She has the courage and confidence to take on challenges.

    * As a first born, she is a respected sibling leader and quiet source of thoughtful , sound, and intelligent advice.

    * She is fun to be around, she values quiet times, her talents are growing, her interests are expanding,  and she has a smile that can light up a room.

    *  As a communicator, she is on point, good with the English language, and skilled at translating the technical jargon of science into effective oral and publication quality written work. The need for STEM generalists with a Strong liberal arts foundation is again underscored by Editor, Donald Kennedy in 6 July edition of Science from the AAAS. It appears that South Korea and Reed College are doing something right.

Currently, she and the rest of the Little family have completed their adventure/vacation across country roads as they relocated from west Davis, CA to their new home at 31 Summit Dr. Rochester, NY 14620 in the suburban community of Brighton.  The adventure includes new friends, new job, new schools and a new mortgage. Whew!  Exciting times.

Thanks to Live Search from Microsoft Virtural Earth for the the space view. In the east, 2D, +  view,  31 Summit Dr. is the red house in the middle of the screen.  Summitt Dr. is 50 feet from the bus stop for the K-2nd, CPS school that serves the entire Brighton Consolidated School District.

Sister-in-Law, Danelle Little of Santa Barbara will be among the first wave of Summit Dr. visitors, before Dos Pueblos H.S. in Goleta/Santa Barbara starts fall classes, starts the swimming season in their new 50 meter pool.  Auntie “Nellie” has just returned from Australia where ,for the second year,  she was the Assistant Coach for the select U.S. Women’s Water Polo Youth Team.  Last year, the team travelled to Montreal and prevailed in the 2006 Junior Pan American Games.

Legacy Journal: Tales from the Heartland-  Reyes of OSU and astronaut Williams

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

Jorges Reyes, a freshman pitcher from Warden, Washington, for the C.W.S champion OSU Beaver, was chosen the outstanding player of the tournament. Suni Williams recently returned on the Shuttle from a record making mission on Space Orbiter

    Main:

The Heartland story is that both are from immigrant backgrounds. Reyes’ grandparents travelled to Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Nebraska to watch a win over NCU.  Similarly, the India born father watched from Massachusetts as his U.S.N.A grad daughter streaked across the night sky on her glowing reentry and eventual landing at Edwards A.F.B in California.

Legacy Journal: Father’s Day in Davis

    Section:

    Sons and Daughters

    Summary:

Sunday, the 17th of June was a banner day for Dads and Grads in Davis.  For this Dad, it was an occasion to pop the cork on a bottle of champaign.  It was an opportunity to celebrate Brighton, NY, bagels, bricks, beams, wood burning fireplaces and basements.

The Davis Little’s have asked relative Damon Fisk, J.D. for his assistance in a private party Brighton, NY home purchase in where Jon will be teaching at MCC starting mid July.  Emma Little is in line to join the first graders at the Council Rock Primary School.

    Main:

The property is located along a cul-de-sac at 31 Summit Dr., Rochester, NY 14620.

Part of the day was spent passing around photos Erika took while touring the property with the sellers, a local professional couple who bought the property from the original owner.  The kids and family are busy preparing for an imminent cross-county relocation.

Food, chatter, the pool and backyard play were part of the order of the day.  Good luck to Jon’s Santa Barbara sister, a Dos Pueblos High School teacher and swimming/ waterpolo coach. She will be an assistant coach of a Speedo sponsored women water polo youth travelling to Australia for a taste of international competiton.

Meanwhile, it may be time to work on the Rochester golf game and prepare for some winter north country XC skiing.

Legacy Journal:  June 14, A Red Letter Flag Day in Davis

    Section:

    Home & Real Estate

    Summary:

June 14 is Flag Day, Patwin Elementary School Graduation and Awards Day, the last day of UCD finals week, and the announcement that Jon and Erika Little have found the perfect new home in Rochester, Brighton, NY. 14620.

    Main:

Daughter, Erika Little, has just returned from a 3 day flying trip to Rochester.  The news is that there offer has been accepted in a private transaction with a local professional couple on a single family resale house with two previous owners.  The property is on a cul-de-sac, Summit Dr., in a stable and mature neighborhood adjacent to undeveloped land.  The property is move in ready.  It has three levels, including a finished and plumbed basement with an outside entrance,  an overhanging first floor desk, a new roof, and relatively low local taxes.

How history tends to repeat itself!  And good things tend to happen to good people.

    * First, the four California Fisk kids were introduced to Santa Rosa, CA in 1973.  Their first home was a private transaction both with the original owners and and third owners, a local builder. The location was at the summmit of a small hillside.  The street,  Del Monte Court off Monte Vista,  was a safe cul-de-sac.  Is there a mountain theme at work here or what.

    * Second,  The pride and long term investment value of home ownership is a reoccurring family generational tradition.

    * Transaction understandings and handshake deals between people who value personal trust and straight talk is a valued way of doing business.  Ready cash and loan prequalification are both handy lubricants.

    *  Erika liked what she saw and experienced at Monroe Community College, Strong Memorial Hospital and the Medical Center near main the University of Rochester campus.
