Legacy Journal: Food, Inflation, and the OLDe Enviromentalism
Section:
Environment
Summary:
* Currently, the U.S. inflation rate is 4.5%, bank CD rate are 3.25%. Treasury notes return 2%. Mortgage rates are low and stable. So, what are the best options for income and safety oriented retirees whos benefits and incomes to to lag the CPI?
** Food, education and energy cost increases are out pacing the CPI and wheat futures have doubled in the past three months. It is expected that one third of U.S. corn production will soon be going into ethanol production. Alcohol, cars and young male drivers have always been a risky combination.
*** Meanwhile, the environmental movement in the U.S. perhaps characterized by the Sierra Club, is partnering with the Steel Workers Union while its membership, leadership, credibility and influence appears to be ebbing. Funds are flowing elsewhere to places like west Africa and Tanzania to supply DDT fortified mosquito nets and modern antimalarials to poor people at the urging of people like Jeffrey Sacks, the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the new energetic head of the new WHO malaria program, Dr. Arata Kochi.
Main:
: Pay off Debit, do not use Credit, reduce non essential consumption and invest in assets that are insulated from long term core inflation like REITs.
:: For Seniors, investing in Green schemes is high risk. At the market, prices seed oil based foods and commodities are clearly increasing.
::: Each five dollars donated to manufacture and distribute a modern mosquito net in Africa has the potential of saving several lives. Five years ago one million young lives were lost each year to malaria. That number is decreasing because of focused funding with accountability strings attached.
Meanwhile, Roger Revelle, grandfather of global warming, founder of the Harvard Center for Population Studies and an acknowledged influence on student Al Gore, is quoted by Time in 1966 as believing that the food, fiber, forage, rubber, etc “carrying capacity of the earth ” is potentially 90 Billion! Today, that center has spawned some powerful voices from African graduate students at HSPH against what is seen as racially motived and directed anti-population planning programs long advocated by Guttemacher and others.

Summary:
“Well, I wish some of you would tell me the brand of whiskey that Grant drinks. I would like to send a barrel of it to my other generals.”—- President Abe Lincoln
Main:
The first Fisk’s to settle in the Oregon Territory were part of a group who followed the Gold Trail to Canyonville and what is now Grant County in eastern part of the state. They were true pioneers who left Carroll County, Illinois, 1 May 1852, at a time Lincoln was living , prospering, and practicing law railroad in Springfield, He was circuit rider, an Illinois legislator, and U.S. congressman. Abe’s friend, Ed Baker, Black Hawk War volunteer , fellow lawyer, loyalist in helping delivery 35% of California vote for the new President. Late, Baker became Oregon’s first U.S. Senator, and the only member of Congress to be fatally wounded during the Civil War. He was eulogized in the Federal Capitol building rotunda with Lincoln in attendance.
It is no accident that the original Oregon Fisks were Whig Republicans, supported Lincoln, put “Union on the state flag voted for Grant, and hated Prohibition. Taxes on alcohol served in small town saloons were the primary source of revenue for early local government services including law enforcement and city water.

Section:
Commentary
Summary:
* What a world! Some say that the world is not reading. Yet, e-mails, text messengers, chat rooms, news outlets instruction manuals, PDF documents, online databases and blogs at exploding. Yes, the newsroom staff at the nytimes was reduced by 7.5%. Competition, cost pressures and technology have a way of reducing the drag effect of death weight.
* Global Warming? It the February spike in mid west tornado activity the result of surveillance and reporting , Gulf Warming, or Cooling from northern Canada weather fronts? That eminent climate and ecology authority, Senator John Kerry , seems to have it all figured out is case some of the rest of us seem conflicted, uncertain or confused.
* Meanwhile, seniors in OLLI classes at Osher RIT are taking on science topics like the Physics of Global Climate and Darwin’s five year round-the world voyage of discover aboard the converted bark, H,M.S. Beagle. at the age of 22 beginning in 1832. It took Darwin another 25 years to digest his experiences and publish his work on evolution, natural selection, and the science framework around the biologic time line and path of the human species. Intelligent Design has come under the microscope and is in the cross hairs of this serious minded group.

: So, thanks from Rochester, NY to Rochester, Minnesota and the staff at Nevin’s shop at EEhosting.com for their recent annual site reregistration work.
:: Thanks for NOAA, the folks at the National Weather Forecasting service, and the good work of Glenn Johnson, the really fine weather reporter at ABC 13WHAM and Democrat&Chronicle Rochester, NY weather columnist.
::: Also, congrats to Jon Little for his new faculty member website at Monroe Community College where he teaches Weather and Climate, and Physical Geography. Jon is a first instructor in the Department of Chemistry and GeoScience . Jon’s site includes a PDF file or his University of Delaware Master’s Degree thesis based on field work done in Alaska’s Arctic North Slope, on site photographs, links to climate and weather resources, and information for his western upstate New York students. He interests included extreme weather, permafrost, local real time weather monitoring, regional geography, and the appropriate use of technology in education. He also teaches at SUNY Geneseo

Legacy Journal: Tornados, Darwin, and Right Sizing
Section:
Columns
Summary:
* Andrew Revkin, the nytimes writer covering the environment from his blog a Dot Earth seem to be on to something significant—- the real nature of Weather Science, Records, and Tornados.
** Charles Darwin, his fellow 19th century Victorians, and the Royal Navy were also keenly aware of the complexity of weather, ocean currents, and natural events like volcanoes. Janet Browne, professor of the History of Science, Medicine and Biology, among others, reminds us of the importance of a historical frame of reference.
*** 4 Giga (billion)tons of carbon dioxide from fossil fuel burning added to the atmosphere seem like a sure burden with consequences. But, each of our nucleated cells has 6 billion DNA base pairs , my thumb drive has 2 Gigs of memory, and each cubic kilometer of ocean water contains one billion gallons or 4 billion pounds of water.
Main:

: So, what is the cause and effect relationship between atmospheric carbon dioxide, Gulf of Mexico surface water temperature, and the frequency and severity of mid west tornadoes? One of the discussant to the Tornado blog article presents graphic evident that suggests that this winter, Arctic Ocean ice has be restored to its historic norm. The story of the arresting photo of polar bears apparently stranded on a summer ice float at sea is interesting.
:: Darwin is coming to the fore yet again. Next year will be the Bicentennial celebration of his birth. Multiple events are planned around the world.
::: Meanwhile, the general level of math, science, and technology Literacy appears to be rather low. Even this week’s brainy PhD student appearing on Are You Smarter than a Fifth Grader? missed the answer to the the million dollar question. The answer was Chuck Yeager. What was the question?
