    Legacy Journal:  Wednesday Leanings

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

This posting is a prelude to May Day.

    Main:

    Lessons Learned during the Week:

    *  The silent majority is optimistic.  Pessimists are a noisy minority.

    *  Many in that minority are narrowly focused on their opinions without considering facts and context.

    *  The nature v nurture,  secular v religious,  local v global   bipolar views of the world are long standing and will persist despite well intended attempts to “educate” young and old about shades of gray alternatives.

Legacy Journal: Sunday Big Sur International Marathon

    Section:

    Sports

    Summary:

    image

The ultimate in spring time weekend warrior events in California includes The Big Sur International Marathon.  The Triathlon tribal gathering at Wild Flower, and the DamFast open water swim at Lake Berryessa would be other examples.

    image

    Main:

:  The start is at 0700 at Ranger Station on Hiway 1 high above the foggy Pacific Ocean.  The finish is at Camel Village at the entrance to Carmel Valley just south of Carmel-by-the-Sea.

This is Mission Ranch, Junipero Serra, and Clint Eastwood country.  The vaqueros and the Padres are not running today.

::  Damon Fisk is bib# 3888.  If the support crew does its job and the knees hold up, he should finish before the 6 hour closing time at 1300 PDT.

:::  Meanwhile, Bill Clinton has been entertaining the locals in Junction City, Oregon 3 weeks before the state mail-in primary.  The results may be interesting.

This weekend, Barak is hanging out closer to home.  His exercise plans may include some Chicago hoops with his brother-in-law, the new MBB Beaver coach at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Benton County, Oregon.  To the best of our knowledge,  Obama has not used up his NCAA eligibility.

    Legacy Journal: Fremont in Oregon

    Section:

    None

    Summary:

    *    1843

**  Wilkes Naval Exploration to the coast of the Oregon Territory.

***  htm text of Fremont Reports with Klamath references. Using your browser Edit>Find page search function on the keyword, “Tlamath” to goto the relevant chronology journal sections entered during the winter late in the year of 1844.

    Main:

“In order to recruit a little the strength of our animals, and obtain some acquaintance with the locality, we remained here for the remainder of the day. By observation, the latitude of the camp was 42° 56’ 51”, and the diameter of the lake, or meadow, as has been intimated, about 20 miles. It is a picturesque and beautiful spot, and, under the hand of cultivation, might become a little paradise. Game is found in the forest, timbered and snowy mountains skirt it, and fertility characterizes it. Situated near the heads of three rivers, and on the line of inland communication with California, and near to Indians noted for treachery, it will naturally, in the progress of the settlement of Oregon, become a point for military occupation and settlement.”——-  John C. Fremont, Corps of Topographical Report.  Klamath Lake observation from the 1844 second expedition.

The map images are intended to a progression of detail and reliability the Pacific coastline, mountains and drainages in the early nineteenth century.

Legacy Journal: Saturday West timeline, first Native American “fossil” and Tracktown.

    Section:

    None

    Summary:

    *  Fossils: A Fecal Trail in the Oregon Desert near Paisley Caves and Summer Lake . Cressman and the UofO Museum of Culture and Natural History.
Rock Hounds in the Great Basin.

    **  A 1840-50 Western time line.

***  Duel track meet in Eugene, Oregon, Track town USA

    Main:

:  To quote Larry McMurty on poet Janet Lewis after the death of her husband: “she did go back to the desert, to the places of the pueblo peoples, the Hopi and Navajo, peoples who appear to live in harmony with the eternal simplicities: sun, stone, sky. She ponders a fossil:”

In quiet dark transformed to stone,
Cell after cell to crystal grown,
The pattern stays, the substance gone….

    ::

:::  If it is a Saturday in the spring in Eugene, it is time for a classic retro duel track meet between the men of UCLA and the Tiger Ducks of the UofO

Legacy Journal: Hooray of the train.

    Section:

    Personals

    Summary:

The kids have been on a week spring break in Rochester.  So, it was time for Jon Little to take them on a quick Amtrak trip to NYC and Philadelphia.

    Main:

The weather was warm, the skies were clear, the folage and flowers were out, and the rail cars were filled with travelers.

    *  The rail station in Philly got rave notices.

    *  Rates were cheap, schedules were kept, the country side was interesting, and the service was central city to central city without security and terminal hassles and delay.

    *  There were no carry on concerns or lost bags.  The system worked and the trio had enjoyed at true mini vacation without using the car, a parking garage, or an airplane.
