    Summary:

Community Colleges:  Looking good to the Class of 2007 Grads.

According to the Education section of the Sunday edition of the nytimes, Community Colleges will be welcoming nearly half of all of this spring’s H..S. graduates attending institutions of higher learning.  The trends are clear and continuing:

    Main:

      *  *  Health Occupations teaching, training and certification preparation is high need area long serviced by CCs.

      *  *  CCs serve a diverse student population with specialists and curricula for the disabled, the undecided, the displaced, the disadvantage, the determined and the debt adverse.  A felony criminal record,  lack of a H,.S. diploma, and no proof of residency or citizenship are not barriers to enrollment and registration.  Some offer ESL classes and a GED program.

      *  *  Some, like Santa Rosa Junior College,  offer a local students with a B average renewable Doyle Foundation Scholarships that more than cover the cost of tuition and books. That Foundation is the majority stockholder in the county wide Exchange Bank.  MESA and the Learning Center offer one-on -one tutoring.  The new Doyle Library is housed in a state-of-the-ART facility.

      *  *  Others, like Monroe Community College in Rochester NY, have campus housing, 2+2 transfer agreements and first class ice hockey fields.  Check out the recent MCC graduation ceremony at the Blue Cross Auditorium.  Video coverage by is by 13WHAM.com, the local ABC outlet.

      *  *  For athletes, CC offer coaching, competition and facilities. Jackie Robinson attended Pasadena City College for two years before transferring to UCLA.  More than 100 CCs in California continue to attract good athletes.  Great training, practice and playing weather, good competition, high visibility to recruiting networks, travel, good coaching, high class facilities, and a variety of communities are among the attractions.  MCC in Rochester has been awarded the 2007Pepsico Prize at the nations best academic CC sports program.

      *  *  Some CCs in Texas are funded by oil flowing from district wells.  One is a magnet for budding tennis stars on a tight budget.

      *  *  Most adapt quickly to the educational and job needs of the local community.

      *  *  Honors Overseas and Independent Study programs are common.

      *  *  Career Counselling, Veterans Support Offices, Reentry Programs, and small classes are additional attractions.

      *  *  Small classes and labs are personally taught and staffed by professional instructors, not graduate students earning their stipend.
