    The rhetoric of the X vs the y chromosome

    Section:

    Commentary

    Summary:

      Today, Maureen Dowd of the nytimes enlisted the might X X chromosome combo in her usual rhetorical war of the sexes column.  True to style, the diminuitive y chromosome is charicatured as the little guy who just does not get it.  More and bigger is defined as genetically better.  In the uban media centers.  Women who can write can indeed complete and win at many levels.  Testosterone and muscle are out; the sharp literary rapier game of wit in in.  Game, Set,  Match.  The Gals take home all the marbles.

    Main:

    But, who is going to:

      * Man the Rescue Helicopters and volunteer to make the plunge into the North Atlantic and North Pacific waters when a ship is taking on water and the crew need a lift to safety?

      * Bake the bread at 0400 AM?

      * Mine the coal, mill the steel,  fall the timber, build the skyscraper and the bridges.

      *  Repair the rigging ?

      * Male role model and coach the next generation of young boys, and yes, daughers, future wives and mothers?

      Sometimes, little things ,like a well placed -CH3 group on a steroid ring, can mean much in molecular biology, anatomy,  physiology, normal psychology and the general culture .

    And so it goes in the tree lined streets of Davis.  Here, and elsewhere, the birds in the trees were singing their gender defining nest building sweet songs to their mates and the world as they welcomed both the rain and the sun.  Most folks below are going about the business of this Sunday, the first day of spring. They seem pleasntly focused on friends, family, and final exams.  The press worry and care of NYC and Washington, D.C. seems….. somehow…..like…... of little and passing concern.  Please pardon the valley talk.
